I received this most encouraging letter from Congressman Henry Brown moments ago:
Mr. Don Alford
688 Forestbrook Road
Myrtle Beach, SC 29579-7907
Dear Mr. Alford:
Thank you for contacting me in regard to H.R. 2811, legislation that would amend the United States Code to include constrictor snakes of the species Python genera as an injurious animal. I oppose this legislation and will do all that I can to make sure it does not come up for a vote on the House floor.
I understand the concerns that some may have over some species of Pythons, such as the Reticulated Python, the world's largest snake, from being imported into the U.S. However, H.R. 2811 is an overly restrictive bill which would block all Pythons from being shipped across state lines, and may lead to difficulties for those who wish to have Pythons as pets.
I have heard from numerous constituents over this and similar legislation, such as the Nonnative Wildlife Invasion Prevention Act. If signed into law, these measures would cause many of the businesses involved in the pet trade to close, and cause their employees to lose their jobs by making it difficult to sell many of the animals involved with their pet trade. I believe that Congress can certainly take steps to prevent incidents caused by some species of Pythons, but I don't think that we should pass legislation that is overly broad.
While I am not a member of the House Committee on the Judiciary, of which H.R. 2811 was referred, I am a member of the House Committee on Natural Resources, and Ranking Member of its Subcommittee on Insular Affairs, Oceans, and Wildlife, which has jurisdiction over numerous legislative measures of a similar nature.
Please know that I will continue to work to prevent these measure from becoming law, and I will do all that I can to protect the pythons that many around our nation call part of their families.
As Congress continues to debate this issue, please sign-up for e-mail updates from my office by visiting http://brown.house.gov/updates. I am honored to serve you in Congress and I look forward to hearing from you on other matters of interest or concern.
Sincerely,
Henry E. Brown, Jr.
Member of Congress
