I recently read a paper (circa 2004) on presynaptic neurotoxins with phospholipases A2 activity. In the article it stated that these phospholipases cause the neurons to bulge, due to vesicles bonding to the pre-synaptic membrane and at the same time might inhibit the retrieval of the vesicles. They concluded that this might result in the depletion of the synaptic vesicles, and so prevent the release of acetylcholine. Does anyone know if there has been additional experimental corroboration of this hypothesis?
Thank you,
Kelly
