C. lannomi was only known from a single dead specimen that was collected in 1966. No live ones have ever been found until now. Apparently they collected five more live ones last year.

The one on the cover picture is gorgeous! it looks like a freakin corn snake.
To me, this is like walking along the beach and finding Nessie, or walking through the woods and coming face to face with Bigfoot. People can rehash and rename stuff all day long, and never will it ever have the feeling I'm sure these guys felt when they saw that little buzztail in real life.
Reckon what a pair of these would sell for at the Columbia show??

PS - Just to share a bit of inside info, I emailed the authors with a congratulations and they shared the following:
"A child found the first one....he brought it to Jacobo and I in a bucket. Jacobo and I were the ones to find the child though. I was the first one to squeal..."Chris...no shit...oh my god...its its its...it really is. " Chris hobbled over while jacobo was in the process of loosing his mind on the ground hugging the bucket.
Jacobo spotted the second one first while standing right next to me...I am going to claim that he saw it b-c my dog laid on top of it and I was in the process of trying to get her to move when it came crawling out from under her.
The rest Jacobo and I found with Ranchers."

I think they killed all five and pickled them in the name of science. No I am not kidding. Seems like some captive propagation would have been in order. I hope I am wrong about the first statement, but I don't think I am.

That would suck. Why can't they study them alive? Eventually, they WILL die of something, preferably, old age, then pickle them. Take care, Marty

Only a single snake was preserved and added to the collection in Mexico City. The remainder are "deposited" as photo vouchers at a couple of different institutions.

Robert: do you know if the others were left in the wild or kept alive in captivity?

It would be nice to see an institution like Santonio zoo get some as they are dedicated to mexican species and have advanced breeding protocalls.

First you would have to establish a sound reasoning for an ex situ breeding program. The animal needs to be looked at in its natural environment to judge what type of population truly exists. Like many animals, they may have a spotty distribution yet be plentiful where they are found.
I'd be more inclined to radio track and get a handle on their basics before jumping to any assumptions.

So true.I just think it is great that they have been found again. In the wild we know that a population is there.I would be willing to bet that there are a few more unknowns are around those giant ranges in mexico.I remember hunting a range down a montery mexico and collecting snakes there. We brought every thing back right across the border. That was 1882.Now it is not even safe to cross. We drove all around mexico from copper canyon to montery and every one was so nice. Those days are long gone.I do remember all of the isolated ranges that I dreamed of hunting one day now it is a no go for sure.
