I am wanting to buy a Heloderma suspectum (gila monster). However, as I understand it these animals are a very protected species in their home ranges. I have read a few stories about people buying them online only to have the US fish and game show up looking into federal lacey act charges. So my question is how are only some of these animals legal and what is needed for them to be legal (in Florida)? I was told by some guy at a pet store that the animal needed some kind of paper work, however I want to be sure.
Thanks,
John

They do need paperwork. Being from Arizona though, you cannot stop them and ask for it.

As far as I know all you need is your VRC license in FL as long as it is an in state sale of a CBB gila.

The paperwork is really a bit of a joke. It basically consists of a letter from whoever you choose to purchase from stating the animal was produced in captivity.

Well, for starters, it is illegal to collect a Gila monster in the wild. Period.
The only legal way to own a Gila monster is to purchase one from a breeder who has documentation that the animals he is breeding are CB...this breeder will then supply you with a documentation that they certify that the animal you are purchasing is a legal CBB animal.
In Florida you must possess a valid VR License in order to be in possession of a venomous reptile. It also must be pit tagged and recorded with FL Game & Fish.
Shipping must also be made via a registered venomous reptile shipper and be sent through Delta in a container that meets their standards.

almost forgot, those stories you refer to sound like they purchased illegal animals that were poached and a sting was set up to find the buyers.
