Hi all,
I have a new arrival male WC A. contortrix (southern) who won't eat yet. I force fed a prekilled mouse gut-loaded with flagyl and panacur for any possible parasites as soon as I got him. He does not appear to be losing weight yet. I will examine fecals as soon as he offers up a sample!
I've always found this species to be good feeders and pretty low-maintainance captives. Does anyone have any tricks they use to kickstart these guys into eating? I've tried feeding live, tease-feeding, leaving a fresh-kill in the enclosure overnight etc.
Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks! :)

Fill the cage with leaves and straw until it is about 2/3 full.
Place the cage in a completely dark room.
Put the snake in the cage and let it acclimate a couple of days.
Without disturbing the snake, drop a live fuzzy in a far corner of the cage, and leave everything alone for a couple of days, then check to see if the fuzzy mouse is gone.
Hopefully, that will work for you. It has worked for difficult copperheads for me.
Best Regards

John has provided good advice. And, the first thing
I would attempt would be just that.. Even try covering
a section of the cage with a towel. If it is a bit on
the skittish side(being WC)I would let him acclimate a
week, maybe even two, with plenty of hiding places and
fresh water..
Don't worry if it takes him a little while to settle
in. The contortrix can go a decent bit of time refusing
food before they drop noticeable weight, and can even
drop a good bit before it becomes a huge concern. Just
don't get overly stressed about it..
If that fails after a week or two, try brining
the feeder mice in sea salt. Works like a charm with
the Agkistrodon..
A number of other tricks to try, but I would try that first..
Take Care,
