Came across young brownish-gray snake Saturday in the woods under a very thin pile of leaves. Had yellow under his neck and a red tongue. We live in NC in the woods with a lake in the front yard. Can you tell me what kind this may be? Thanks

Possibly a harmless ringneck

Lauraleigh,
the snake you describe sounds like a ringneck snake to me. Did the yellow form a ring around his neck? If so, the snake is harmless and eats worms and small lizards. Ringnecks are very small snakes averaging about 12 to 14 inches long when fully grown. Karl
