I was wanting to know if anyone could give the pros and cons of changing an O.hannah from an all snake diet to an all rodent diet. I know the name implies that the said snake should be a snake eater but I know of so many zoos and private keepers who feed a rodent only diet. My concerns are about impaction issues due to the fur and will this diet affect the lifespan of the snake versus an all snake diet. In my own experience I have noticed that the O.hannahs fed an exclusive diet of rodents tend to have more girth compared to the leaner ones who eat snakes only. Convience is not an issue with me just giving the snake the best quality of life I possible can.Any help in this matter will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Todd

Todd,
we have kept O. hannah on rodents for years, with no ill affects. However, you would need to watch for obesity and adjust the feeding schedule, just as you should be doing with all your animals.....I hear all the rederic about feeding them only snakes, one of my females, who is now with another keeper, is over 8 years old, has been on rodents since she was 6 months old and is one of the healthiest Kings I have ever seen....I can only tell you what has given us success...and I know several other keepers and "professionals" who have use rodents for many years...
I wouldnt try and get neonates on pinkies though, they are kinda fragile for the first few months...you could start to tinker with the swtich after you get them well established....
Impaction is more of a hydration issue, you would REALLY have to be overfeeding to get them impacted on rodent hair, O. hannah needs access to lots of water, so provide plenty of it and maintain a decent humidity for them....a large black plastic mortar mixing bin from Lowes is great for them as adults...we install a 3/4" drain in bottom with a ball valve and it makes changing the water quick and easy, and its large enough for them to actually get in the water...hope this helps. LOL...maybe breed them hairless rats if your worried about the hair....LOL...either way just keep them hydrated whether you chose to feed only snakes or use rodents...if have an unlimited supply of feeder snakes at the correct sizes, then what the heck, you could keep them on the snake diet...they will do fine either way
