I went out herpin', no collectin' though, just photos. Look for info on the Green Swamp also. Go to Dean Ripa's serpentarium while you are there, it's a must for anyone in that area (try asking the people there about herp spots, but don't use the word collecting).

The serpentarium is at 20 Orange St. in downtown Wilmington, NC. The building is brand new and right on the river. If you like bushmasters you will love it. There is also one of the best king cobra displays I have ever seen. I think the feedings are at 3pm. You can get the info and contact numbers at http://www.bushmastersonline.com/
Someone told me that the Green Swamp, Hoffman Forest, and Croatan Forest are good places. Keep your eye out for Pitcher Plants and Venus Fly Traps.
good luck

The NC Museum has recently published a small booklet about the venomous snakes of North Carolina. It has all the usual info and some nice photos and illustrations. The best feature of the book is that it shows localities where known specimens have been actually collected or observed. This would make for a good tool to use to start off your herping trip to NC. I ordered my copy online. If you are interested in getting a copy, let me know and I will find the address. The booklet sells for $3.00.

If you plan on collecting any venomous other then Agkistrodon in NC you will be brakeing the law!!! Fish and Game does sting operations at all of the hot spots in Eastern NC and elsewhere in the state. Ive known people who were mearly moveing a copperhead off the road get stoped and delayed an hr, includeing a full search of their vehicle!!! They dont play!!!
Regardless of the legalities you should not be collecting anyway!! There is nothing in NC that you cant get for a measly couple of bucks through a breeder. Anything worth money is off limits!!!!
Please just photograph and release if you attend on snake hunting North Carolina. You will be doing us, the law and most importantly the animals a favor.
Regards,
Jeremy
