Could someone with experience keeping this species tell
me if there are any peculiarities specific to this snake, i.e. are they prone to be picky eaters or do they prefer cooler temps ??? I plan on adding one to my collection this year and any info would be much appreciated. -Mike

I keep many locale specific Blacktails; some tend to be problem feeders. If they are fresh, WC specimens-you can bet they are going to be a pain to get started. The best items to get them started on feed are gerbils or deer mice. Be carful with gerbils-they can be ferocious when left in a cage with a snake that has no desire to even strike a prey item. I have seen gerbils attack snakes, biting and stomping there little feet like a pouting child. The best thing to do is to stun the gerbil before you attempt to feed. A nice tight hide box and a temperature drop at night is beneficial for Northern Blacktails. I have had the best success feeding them at night. But, once you have gotten a Blacktail acclimated and feeding regularly, it is fairly easy to get them to accept mice or rats; and they do make good captives. Willy - MrBigzsnakes
