Yes all snakes shed, multiple times per year. They do so for a number of reasons. It helps them disgard mites/ticks in the wild, it is no longer big enough (as snakes continue to grow their entire lives) and finally it just wears out.
It is said that skin that is ready to shed is itchy. While I have never had a snake tell me that ;-) snakes do tend to be a little more irritable until the skin is completely off. I'd have to agree that it is uncomfortable but not painful.
Snakes eyes do go opaque during shed. It is actually a little bit of fluid that develops between the new skin and the old skin to aid in shedding. Their vision is impaired and yes that does but them at a slightly higher risk. However snake don't rely on eyesight as a sole means to sense their enviornment.
Hope this helps.
