I HAve contacted different groups in the past about these issues and have found little or no interest in pursuing it!.apparantly ther isnt enough money to be made protesting snake abuse!..Wich really enlightens you to where most of that "animal Rights" movement is at!...Besides Id be really careful about getting into bed with those groups...Not sure Id want they're support...But the roundups are a disgrace..and Finding some way to educate and stop them would be a great project!

I live in Texas and the community of Sweetwater has a billboard along the interstate 20 promoting the round up. The only group that I know of that is against the roundup, is the Human Society of the USA. The problem is the Human Society wants to ban the ownership of reptiles for anyone. The roundup will probably go on as long as snake haters are spending money to attend the event. Should rattlesnakes get on the cities list as endangered the Federal goverment may shut down all roundups.

hey,justinian2120 here.planning on trying georgia out in late march.usually go alone, but see no harm in at least contacting a fellow herper or two-probably could be beneficial for us!i know the laws of Ga.,and plan on just shooting great photos-i resist taking from already-stressed wild populations-c.b. are better to keep anyway..what do you think or know about that state, and what are you planning?

This deals with the laws that may govern the roundups more than the roundups themselves. I too live in Texas where you some of you may know Canebrakes are a threatened species. Several months ago the local paper ran an article about a police officer and an animal control officer 'saving the day' by killing this vicious rattlesnake in the park. 'It was only yards from children' and after they caught it they proceeded to remove it's head. I went nuts on the paper, the cops and TPWD in Austin for this atrocity. TPWD's official response to me was that local officials have latitude over the law where 'dangerous' animals are concerned. Since they had it captired they should have relocated it, but that's not what happened. I asked TPWD in Austin to give me permission to be contacted to relocate these animals in future situations. I was denied becuase nobody other than a game warden can legally touch A Canebrake in this state or it's a Class C misdemeanor. Of course the people that killed the aforementioned rattlesnake will fall under no such penalty. I tried again to explain to them that i could safely relocate snakes that had been captured if they were gong to be killed anyway, DENIED again. since it's not a cute fluffy squirrel nobody really cares what happens to it. Try to care for a snake properly and you can be denied just because the majority doesn't feel it's appropriate. I tried to get TPWD to explain the point of having laws to protect animals then not enforcing them. If killing the animals isn't wrong why is it so bad for me to care for one? I believe I still have some of the infofrom TPWD if anyone wants it. I also think I still a copy of the original article from the paper.
To make a long story longer, it seems that the state should govern roundups because by law one person may only possess 5 of any one species and 25 in the aggregate(total). It seems odd that people bringing the snakes inare bringing in hundreds at a time. Also TNRCC says everything's legal with using gas to expel them from holes becuse you don't have to report a petroleum spill unless 600 gallons or more are spilled on one acre of land. But when matters are concerning snakes the state washes their hands of the whole sordid affair and leaves it to the local officials. As far as my experience is concerned with local officials, their opinion is the only good snake is a dead snake.
Thanks, John

Jtedens..You could not have made a better point!
It is So frustrating how the local police..game wardens..etc..Have this One sided Crappy attitude..that somehow They are the only ones who decide what can happen to said captured "offending" reptile.....I have encountered this in NC.. and had a perfectly healthy timber rattler killed right in front of me ..Shot by a local police officer"HEROE"..becuaes he deemed it a threat..and I as a 40 experienced "civilian" herper was not obviously qualified to remove and relocate the snake ..besides that would have robbed him of his macho heroe moment...Of course this guy wouldnt have known a Copperhead from a kingsnake..Only thing gave it away was it had RATTLES!!!!!!.. So you can run over ..chop heads.
gas.....but you better have your permits if your a herper!!

I still find it incredible that in a supposed first-world country something such as the roundups continue, apparently with the support of the law and many people.
If that were to happen in South Africa, say a puff roundup, there would be a massive outcry, Nature conservation and the cops would be handing out fines and jail-terms.
I also find the silence amongst herp-keepers in the US very bewildering-cant you guys get aprotest together or something???

This is extreamly sad. I have heard of cops around here killing 5 copperheads and 7ft cane brakes and when ever some one says they have a copperhead it almost always turns out to be a rat snake or watersnake. Also, every one around here seems to belive that we DO have cottonmouths when realy they remain in the south eastern part of the state. What we DO have is a few differn't species of watersnakes, nothing more. We use to have a rattlesnake round up in okeene, but I think they were shut down, then I hear that it still goes on, but I'm still not sure, but I do know that a guy came all the way to stillwater ( across the state from Okeene ) to catch Cnae brakes and would use them. I though that it was a cheep way to win, or, that the population damage was so great that they were being forced to spread out to find more buzz tails. My veiw of round ups: Absolutely DISGUSTING! WRONG! and down right EVIL.
Ok I better leave before I say something bad about the goverment and get thrown in jail.
Cheers,
Blake
