I am planning a trip to Palo Duro Canyon,Texas in May. I plan to spend the better part of a week up there. I figure i can squeeze in some snake hunting while I'm there. Has anyone ever herped that area before? What species can I expect to find? Is early May still too cold in that area for most species? I hit Big Bend late last April and a cold front came in the night after we got there and ruined most of the snake hunting. It was hot during the day but too cold at night for herps. However I did have a nice experience with a cactus going after a coachwhip. Duct tape is great for removing the spines afterward. If anyone has advice for Palo Duro I would appreciate it.
Thanks, John

May is alright. Hot days and cool evenings.
Remember it is a State Park, so NO collecting!
Probably, you will see: Western Diamondback Rattlesnakes, Bullsnakes, Coachwhips, Checkered Garters, Great Plains Rat Snakes, Plains Hognose Snakes or Eastern Hognose Snakes.
For other herps, there should be earless lizards, tiger salamanders, spadefoot toads, etc.
You might also want to try the Lake Meredith area north of Amarillo.
Have fun!

Do you know any certain roads that would be good for cruising at night(if temps are up)? Roads that are legal to collect on would be best.

Road cruising is illegal on public roads. Lots of people have been ticketed in the Trans-Pecos while looking for Gray-banded Kingsnakes. You would also probably get a ticket for the same thing near Palo Duro Canyon State Park. So there aren't any legal roads. Sorry.

I have yet to deal with a game warden out West looking for grey bands, or whatever else I can find, but it's not uncommon to see 20-30 other people a night out road cruising around the Del Rio area. Going as far as Big Bend I still run into other snake hunters. I'm not saying road cruising isn't illegal, but I don't think the law's enforced. I wasn't aware that it was illegal either. Thanks for the heads up.
