I will be going to Peru this summer with a program that is doing undergraduate field research south of Iquitos. Does anyone know about the venomous snakes of the area? I have been trying to find information (like a field guide to snakes of Peru) but have been unsuccessful. This is information which I would really like to know before wandering naively through the forest. Thanks.

There are a number of venomous species in Amazonian Peru. Basically, they include:
- the bushmaster (Lachesis muta)
- various lanceheaded pitvipers (genera Bothrops and Bothrocophias). The most common is likely to be Bothrops atrox, other species that might be encountered are Bothrops bilineatus, B. taeniatus, B. brazili, and Bothrocophias hyoprorus.
- coral snakes, genus Micrurus - several species are found in the area.
For references, try:
Dixon, J.R. & P. Soini. 1986. The Reptiles of the Upper Amazon Basin, Iquitos Region, Peru. Milwaukee Public Museum, Milwaukee.
Campbell, J.A. & W.W. Lamar (1989) The Venomous Reptiles of Latin America. Comstock, Ithaca & London.
Photos of some species can be seen in the elapid and crotaline photo albums here at venomousreptiles.org. See also:

Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Wolfgang
