How many snakes are endangered federally, how bad are they endangered. If I am correct the government has little or nothibng at all to do with the protection of snakes,Why,. Can a 13 year old like me get a permit to catch or breed them. My E-mail is Brad24p@hotmail and yahoo, and snakecatcher01@aol.com

Hi Snake,
The government does indeed protect a few species, notably the Ridge-nosed Rattlesnake (Crotalus willardi). Also many states, particularly in the east, have protected species. Unfortunatly, some of these laws reflect the views of polititions and are pretty silly. Others are based on firm, scientific grounds. It's all a "tangled web" indeed, and much too complicated to go into here. You might start researching with your state Fish & Game.
The problem with setting up to breed endangered species is getting permits and the base stock. Then there is always the possibility that any releases you might ultimatly do would bring pathnogens (sp?) into the wild populations and do more damage than good (this has happened). Therefore, your program would have to be under near-laboritory conditions. Also, you would have to have a large number of animals to keep your genitics sound. Then, you must know a great deal about the natural history of the species so as to know exactly when and where to release the off-spring.
What is endangering our herps, snakes included, more than anything is habitat destruction. Every time a new strip mall goes in, we lose a little more, and a golf course? Forget it!
You ask a good question. Thanks.

Filthy is, as usual, on the money, snake catcher. I know a guy in Miami who bred indigos one year, but Game & Fish would not allow him to either sell them or release them. If you intend to do any work with protected snakes, make sure you can do something with the offspring before you begin a breeding project.

How's it going?
The big news here is that I managed to sneak back into Kingsnake. Dunno how long it will be before I get caught at it and ousted again.
Have you visited or lurked around The Hide? It's turning into a good place for serious and not so serious discussions. Like to see ya over there.
luck,
f
