Hi,
They can indeed be kept, I've done it, but I'm afraid that they don't make very rewarding captives due to their extreme shyness. They also stress fairly easily.
They do best in a peatmoss / potting soil mix. It should be fairly deep, a couple of inches at least. Rings like to burrow. They feed on earthworms, salamanders, other, smaller snakes, insect larvae, the occasional slug, and so forth. A shallow bowl of water should be on hand at all times and the substrate should be kept, not damp, but just VERY slightly moist. This is best done by misting once a week or so. Temps about 80. If he goes off feed in the fall, cool him down to around 55 degrees until spring.
If I may, I'd like to suggest that you release the little guy back where you found him. There are many more species that are a lot easier to maintain and you'll get to see them a lot more often. Any of the Rat, Corn, or King snakes will fill the bill nicely, as will one of the Gopher Snakes, and they are all available as captive bred from dealers and pet stores (beware pet stores. Try and find one where the owner KNOWS something about snakes). You might also consider a Garter.
Wishing luck,
f

They will eat in captivity.I kept one for a brief period of time for observation and got it to take worms quit easily. If you do decide to keep it I recommend you catch your own worms.I was informed that the dirt the worms are shipped in contains a chemical that can kill a snake.
