I live in white lake michigan and we have some rattle snakes in the back yard by the
pond we have seen 8 and been attacked by two.
.We have had no luck having them removed we however have a guy from the DRN
who came out to take a venom sample and the reading was a 7 out of 10{???}
he says every snake is diffrent but even if the venom is low that if one of our kids
get bit they dont have a chance.the snakes have also killed a few cats in
the neighborhood (we think) so any advice would be so helpfull...please let me know
anything you have to add.like i said the DNR wont move them they say it is up to the
land owners and the land owners wont do it. what do i do?

Hi K,
What you have is the Timber Rattlesnake. These tend to be quite mild tempered and will not attack unless molested.
They are my all-time, favorite Rattler.
Of course, the best defense is knowing the habits of the snake. I reccommend that you read up on it.
Keep your yard closely mowed and allow no trash that might provide shelter to a snake to accumulate. Try and keep rodents around your home under control. This last is kind'a tough. Mice are hardy. But it's rodents that will bring in snakes, including the odd Timber or so.
If you encounter a snake, simply step away from it. This way, nobody gets hurt and it will soon enough leave. And even sooner if there is no shelter nor food for it around.
Wishing luck,
f

Actually I believe that they would be Eastern Massasauga and not Timber rattlesnakes. But anyways I live Somewhat around that area and would also be willing to move them for you. Contact me at

If indeed they are E. Massasaugeas (Sistrurus c. catenatus) it would be wise to check the laws. These are protected throughout their range. A couple of years ago, I heard that they were being considered for federal protection, much like C. willardi has. Dunno if anything came of it.
Comes to that, if they are Timbers, checking the law might be a good idea as well. These too, are gaining state protection, here and there.
luck,
f
