Just last sunday I caught a 4ft copperhead. I was wondering is theis common. I think it may of been a gravid female but I did not get enough time to know for sure.

4ft Copperheads are definitely not common, but not unheard of either. I have seen several specimens of the nominate form that were close to that size, including a few that exceeded it by a few inches. A very old Louisiana specimen I kept measured 51 inches post-mortem. Several other captive-bred specimens that I raised attained 44-45 inches within their first 5 years or so.

Phillip:
Not common at all. I was lucky enough to catch a big one when I was your age. Northern that measured 51 inches. I have pictures of it somewhere in my photo archives.
Best,
Al

Bet you almost wet yourself...lol I certainly was on the verge at that age. When I got home and looked up the maximum record length of the one I caught I nearly did it again.

Its weird. Ive seen 1 copperhead this summer over four feet, one that was about 3 and 1/2 and one that was well over for foot. This is the first year that Ive seen them that big. They were all on the roads after dark also.
