Description: This series of Llama photos was submitted by Inga.
8 year old pregnant female llama envenomated on the right upper lip by a Prairie rattlesnake, Crotalus viridis viridis. Swelling is near maximum. Envenomation occurred on a Monday morning and by noon the lower face/jaw had severe edema with lips grossly protruding. She was given only antibiotics due to pregnancy, and ranitidine because llamas can develop ulcers when stressed. Tuesday the swelling moved up her face and she only had slits where her eyes were and her face was exceedingly broad. Wednesday the swelling was receding from her eyes downward. Thursday the swelling was significantly better. Friday the swelling under her jaw/neck was significantly better. Saturday her face looked almost normal with slight swelling under jaw. By the following Monday you would never have known she had been bitten.
