'Harmless' snake proves deadly
Friends of a reptile enthusiast who died after being bitten by a snake have expressed their shock that a man who knew snakes so well had been killed by a species generally regarded as harmless.
Ron Siggins, 37, of Pascoe Vale, died yesterday afternoon after being bitten by a whip snake at Harcourt North, 120km north west of Melbourne.
Victoria's community of herpetologists could not believe what had happened to Mr Siggins, who had been around snakes for 30 years.
"He's got bitten by something that would normally just make you feel a bit sick and give you a bit of a headache but he's had a reaction to it.''

Anti-Venom Expert Treats Own Son For Snake Bite
YUCAIAPA, Calif. -- It's currently peak snake season in Southern California, and officials in San Bernardino said they are recording more snake bites than normal.
Among the recent snake-bite victims was Jude Bush, a toddler who was bitten when he played with a small rattlesnake in Yucaipa. He was rushed to a hospital, where the doctor who was the anti-venom expert on duty was his own father.
"Two marks show where the baby rattler sunk its fang into the two-and-a-half-year old boy," KNBC's Mary Parks reported. "The snake hung on, injecting venom the whole time, until Jude shook the snake loose."
Jude's mother, Amy Bush, called a neighbor to catch the snake.
"I got the kids back in the house and called 911 and knew we needed a heliocopter because it was a rattlesnake bite," Amy told Parks. "We needed to get to the hospital quickly."

Are Smaller Venomous Snakes More Dangerous?
Several times each year someone asks in class about the relative danger of an envenomation from a small versus a large crotaline (aka pit viper). Some people are insistent that smaller snakes are more dangerous. This idea has always felt counterintuitive to me. The explanations seem fanciful at best. Usually, people argue that larger (and therefore older) snakes possess some sort of volume control. They argue that larger snakes hold back venom against humans because we are not food for them. These larger snakes want to warn us with a strike but preserve venom for when it matters, like a meal.

Australia's lizards are venomous too
Australia's not only home to venomous snakes, spiders and jellyfish, now scientists have discovered that its lizards are venomous too.
For instance little bearded dragon lizards that cruise around the suburbs have classic rattlesnake venom, scientists report online today in the journal Nature.
But the venom is not dangerous to humans, says Dr Bryan Fry from the University of Melbourne's Australian Venom Research Unit, who led the international research team.
The lizards don't produce enough venom and what little they do is used to kill prey.
Dr Bryan Fry spent months in the Australian desert and tropics capturing, studying and milking dozens of lizards.
He and his colleagues then studied their toxins, DNA and evolution.

Florida's snake-friendly rules are one of the main reasons the state is attractive to snake keepers, said B.W. Smith, who owns Southern Reptile Education, a Smyrna-Ga.-based consulting and training group.
"We saw this happen inAlabama several years ago," he said via e-mail. "Some idiot had a couple cobras get loose in his trailer park, and the state promptly proposed an all-out ban. It was later changed to a permit system. We most often see this in cities."

Cobra bite lands 'snake boy' in hospital
A 15-year-old boy, who claims that his room is home to nearly 150 snakes, is recovering in hospital after he was bitten by a deadly Cape cobra.
However, this is not "Snake Boy" Bokamosho Nthelang's first visit to hospital. He has been bitten twice before, once by a cobra and once by a puffadder.
Nthelang said he kept about 150 snakes in his room and had started collecting at the age of 10.
Spokesperson for the ministry of environment and conservation, Les Abrahams, said that during a previous visit to the boy's home, they found that the youngster was fascinated by the reptiles.
"We will consider giving him formal training in snake handling in the future. However, no permission has been given to him to keep all the snakes."

Cousin helps save snakebite victim
Alex Clark thought his life was over at age 13.
A hefty rattlesnake took two bites out of Alex's right leg, injecting its deadly venom into the boy on Wednesday. But quick thinking and a cousin's help saved his life.
Alex, who's been recovering in the intensive-care unit at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, was stable Saturday. He's been given a whopping 90 vials of antivenin; the average bite victim receives 12 to 36 vials, nurse Karen Pierce said.
It has now been over 5 years since the snakebite. This article was written only 3 days after the acident. Alex was in the hospital ICU 10 days and received 160 vials of antivenin. As a result of the 2 bites, each 1-1/2" in width, Alex' injuries included total muscle atrophy and tendon rupture. This fall, 2011, Alex will undergo tendon transfer surgery to hopefully restore motion to his foot.

Don't get so rattled at the sight of a rattlesnake
So, what should we do when we do see a rattler?
Most of the time, we can just walk around the snake. The snake is happy to continue whatever it is doing, and we can pass without even eliciting a reaction. The most likely reaction on the part of the snake is to simply sit and let you pass. The next most likely reaction is that the snake will slowly retreat to a safer hiding place.

Dry weather has snakes on the slither
Dr. William Hudson, emergency room physician with Holston Valley Medical Center, agrees that snakebites are a rarity at HVMC, and antivenin is rarely used, especially with copperhead bites.
"Most copperhead bites get better without it. There is a fairly high-risk profile by giving antivenin because it has horse serum in it," Hudson said.
"Unless it is a large copperhead that strikes in the face or a vascular area with a good dose of venom, the antivenin is usually not necessary. In those cases, we see a lot of pain, swelling, numbing, nausea and vomiting, and later, some bleeding problems. (yeah Doc, that CroFab has lots of horse serum in it !)

It's scary how easily fears can catch on
I hate snakes, and I taught my children to detest them as well. I imagined — and sometimes dreamed — that this snake would lurk about my home ready to bite, squeeze or eat my family and me alive. Every time I saw a snake in a book, I'd say with a grimace on my face and dread in my voice, "I just hate snakes," as I quickly turned the page. If a snake appeared on TV, I'd instantly turn the channel, saying something like, "I just can't watch that. I'll dream about snakes if I do." Lessons From Snakes: The Better Part Of Valor
found that when test snakes were confronted with danger their first reaction was to retreat. Smaller snakes, although just as likely to flee or strike as larger snakes, were more likely to issue warnings. But, over all, test snakes of all sizes were more likely to exercise the better part of valor: they ran away.

Little Fido learns snake avoidance
Arizona has 14 species of rattlesnakes, said dog trainer Web Parton, who teaches dogs to avoid snakes. Snake avoidance training has become more popular every year, said Parton, who has taught it for more than 20 years.
He's joined with fellow dog trainer Jay Smith to head the Humane Society of Southern Arizona's snake avoidance classes this year, offered at its Companions for Life Training Center, 3465 E. Kleindale Road.
The classes have been packed, he said, and the duo train about 40 dogs every weekend.
Cody was one of 10 dogs on hand for a recent Friday night session, which lasts more than two hours and costs $65 per dog.
Veterinarians say the cost to treat a snake bite easily can top $1,000.
"We'll give you our standard line," Parton said to kick off the class. "We are here to traumatize your dog for life."
He said just getting a glimpse of the live rattlesnakes used for the training - Arizona's most common and aggressive Western diamondback - is enough to traumatize some owners.

Man in critical conditions after rattlesnake bite
When a snake bite victim arrived at Palomar Medical Center Wednesday night, an emergency room doctor issued an urgent order: get more antivenin. Ordinarily, it takes about 12 vials to counter the toxic effect of snake venom. The 36-year-old landscaper needed more than three times that amount. The victim's ordeal started Wednesday shortly before 6 p.m., when he felt a snake bite his hand as he cleared leaves from under a bush on a Deer Springs property. But en route to Palomar Medical Center, the victim's blood pressure plummeted, his breathing grew labored and his body started shaking. But after consulting a snake bite expert, the emergency room doctor ordered additional vials from Camp Pendleton. The man was treated with about 40 vials of antivenin.

Natural Selection Not The Only Process That Drives Evolution?
Why have some of our genes evolved rapidly? It is widely believed that Darwinian natural selection is responsible, but new research suggests that a separate neutral (nonadaptive) process has made a significant contribution to evolution. surprisingly, the patterns of molecular evolution in many of the genes they found did not contain signals of natural selection. Instead, their evidence suggests that a separate process known as BGC (biased gene conversion) has speeded up the rate of evolution in certain genes. This process increases the rate at which certain mutations spread through a population, regardless of whether they are beneficial or harmful. "The research not only increases our understanding of human evolution, but also suggests that many techniques used by evolutionary biologists to detect selection may be flawed," BGC is thought to be strongest in regions of high recombination, and can cause harmful mutations can spread through populations. The results lead to the provocative hypothesis that, rather than being the result of Darwinian selection for new adaptations, many of the genetic changes may be the result of the fixation of harmful mutations.

New antivenom could save more snakebite victims
A snakebite antivenom has been developed that is more powerful than conventional antidotes and works even when it is unclear exactly what species of snake has bitten the victim.
Snake-free venom
Simon Wagstaff and colleagues at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine in the UK have now made a serum without using snake venom. Instead, they started with the DNA of the carpet viper, which is responsible for the majority of snakebite deaths in west Africa, and looked for the genes that are active when the snake is refilling its venom sacs.
A dozen of these genes code for metalloprotease enzymes that destroy blood vessels and cause haemorrhaging. From these genes they created a “consensus” sequence that resembles as closely as possible all the different genes.
Snakebites kill tens of thousands of people each year, yet supplies of traditional antivenom are drying up. The inventors of the new antidote hope it will be taken up in the poor countries where it is most needed.

New hope for snake charmers
We will also establish training centres for the snake charmers where they will be shown how to scientifically collect venom from a snake, which is of huge medicinal value, without harming the creature. According to modern procedure, a sophisticated needle is softly injected into the gland located behind the teeth of the cobra to extract venom. But, the entire poison is never extracted from the gland as it would introduce complications for the snake.

Of rattlesnake fangs and hypodermics
Nancy's bite was definitely not dry, her finger quickly swelled to resemble a sausage and turned very dark; her lips felt numb and she was tingly all over.
The ER doctor informed us that Nancy would be receiving 6 vials of antivenin (the anti-venom drug) at a cost of over $8,000 per vial... Nancy received a whopping 627 micrograms of the mercury-based preservative, thimerosal through her IV tube delivering the snake antivenin. Perhaps the scientists who make the stuff missed the research showing that mercury is a poor preservative and tragically neurotoxic.
(Excellent article by a Dr. on the extremely high profit that hospitals make on CroFab and the dangers of the mercury preservative in that product).

Poisonous snake man of Papua New Guinea
David Williams clambered over a heap of discarded coconut shells, inspecting the husks gingerly for deadly snakes lurking within. Two highly poisonous Papua New Guinean small-eyed snakes - whose venom can kill a person in hours - had been captured and safely boxed away, ready to be transported to Mr Williams’ laboratory in the capital, Port Moresby.
It was just another day at the office for Mr Williams, an Australian scientist who has devoted his career to saving hundreds of lives lost to snake bites in Papua New Guinea each year.
For several months at a time, he criss-crosses the country, armed with a two-pronged “grab stick” and cloth sack, to capture some of its deadliest predators - death adders, Papuan black snakes, brown snakes and the worst offender of all, the fearsome Papuan taipan.
(I wonder what the final results were for the contest we were voting on for David Williams last year ?)

Rattlesnake's bite was 'like watching it in slow motion'
For young Tripp Ryan, a hike in the woods he grew up exploring turned into a life-or-death experience when he was suddenly bitten by a large rattlesnake. The ordeal that followed, including 11 days in intensive care at Shands Jacksonville, was one for the medical record books."I had tightness in my chest, no saliva, my vision was going and I had the sweats," he recalled. On the walk out, he called his dad, Zac, on his cell phone. Then he called 911. Emergency personnel took him to Orange Park Medical Center and after five hours he was transferred to Shands. Doctors began giving him the snake antivenin serum. After 18 to 20 vials, Tripp was still suffering the effects of the bite, and was not responding to the serum. Doctors decided to switch to an outdated version of the venom antidote. Tripp relapsed three times during the course of treatment and eventually took an astounding 88 vials of antivenin.

Bry Loyst, the curator for the zoo, said he as soon as he found out about the incident he and an employee of the zoo immediately drove down to Toronto, grabbing all of their available antivenin. However, he added the man was treated at a Toronto hospital and required 10 vials of his antivenin and 15 antivenin vials from the Toronto Zoo, who also came to his aid.

Rescue crisis at Snake Park
Where is Noah? The Fitzsimons Snake Park might just need him.
They have the task of moving the more than 250 snakes and 3 000 other animals in the next few days, which is just about the tallest order any animal sanctuary can be given and only usually happens in times of flood or earthquake. The problem is that the snakes, crocodiles and every other creepy crawly creature who know it as home, don't know any of this. So they are going to get a huge fright when the upheaval starts - and many might not survive the ordeal.

Robotic Spyplanes have Medical uses too
This isn’t the first time that we have reported on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), and most of the time, these are used for spying in enemy territory. It appears that UAVs have medicinal uses as electronic flying couriers. For example, you can send in a flyer into an area, get a medical sample of the patient, then send it back to a lab for analysis. The flyer can then send back the proper medicine for the case, such as anti-venom for a snakebite.

Sailor bitten by rare snake
Reg Furlong learned an important lesson on Saturday night about snakes: stay away, especially if you don’t know anything about them. He also learned that if you are bitten by a poisonous snake, quick treatment is not a sure thing. A saw-scaled viper bit Mr Furlong, 61, at the Ras al Khaimah Sailing Club, where he is commodore. He is being treated at Saif Hospital for kidney problems attributed to the venomous bite on his finger, but his wife said he was turned away from two hospitals because they could not treat snake bites.

Scamp the dog survives snake bite attack in Malton town centre
“Scamp was walking in the grass when he started jumping up and down on his back leg. I thought he’d been stung by a wasp, but I had a look in the long grass and I couldn’t see anything. He couldn’t walk, but we were only five minutes from our house so I carried him home.” “The vet said it was one of the worst cases of anaphylactic shock he had seen in a dog. It was frightening, because we weren’t out in Dalby Forest, or somewhere else you might expect wild animals. Scamp is a lovely little dog – very scampish – and it is terrible to think we could have lost him within half an hour if we hadn’t taken him to the vet.”

Scientists put bite on snakes
KEN Winkler knows his snakes. But has the physician and toxinologist ever been bitten? "Never. I take a low-risk approach. Get your collaborators to handle the snakes," he confesses, pointing to one such collaborator, doctoral student David Williams. That's 2.9 bites per 100,000 Australians. Winkel estimates that just a handful -- perhaps two, three or four -- Australians die each year from snakebite. He found PNG's annual incidence of snakebite was 561.9 cases per 100,000 people. Nearly 26 per cent of the victims died. Globally, about 5 million people are bitten each year, of whom up to 200,000 will die. Others will be maimed for life, suffering amputated arms and legs.

Sea Snakes Seek Out Freshwater To Slake Thirst
Sea snakes may slither in saltwater, but they sip the sweet stuff. So concludes a University of Florida zoologist in a paper appearing this month in the online edition of the November/December issue of the journal Physiological and Biochemical Zoology. Harvey Lillywhite says it has been the “long-standing dogma” that the roughly 60 species of venomous sea snakes worldwide satisfy their drinking needs by drinking seawater, with internal salt glands filtering and excreting the salt. Experiments with three species of captive sea kraits captured near Taiwan, however, found that the snakes refused to drink saltwater even if thirsty — and then would drink only freshwater or heavily diluted saltwater. (cool research - it would seem that this should be obvious, but for years folks have had it wrong. Cro)

Snake bite is a 'neglected tropical disease'
Cobras, vipers, black mambas and other venomous snakes take between 20,000 and 94,000 lives each year, and bite another 421,000 to 1,841,000 people. However, the economic toll of snakebites could be far greater than many infectious diseases, says Janaka de Silva, an epidemiologist at the University of Kelaniya in Ragama, Sri Lanka, who spearheaded the new report. De Silva is hoping the study will raise the profile of snakebites. "We want to get the snake bite classified as a neglected tropical disease," he says.

Snake kills IMT female student
Miss Bibian Nnamonu was bitten to death by a mysterious snake. The victim was sleeping in between two other ladies when the cobra bit her leg. Her roommates immediately killed the snake, while some people, who have knowledge of unorthodox method of treating snake bites, moved into action to get her treated. Some people quickly procured what looked like a crude oil which they poured on her bleeding leg apparently to “neutralize the poison deposited by the cobra”, but the pains increased, forcing them to rush her to the Hospital. The snake was also taken along with the lady to the hospital. The student was said to have died two hours after the cobra bite. The mystery surrounding the incident has sent jitters down the nerves of some residents of the area, while some people suspected that the snake might have been sent by an evil and diabolic person to specifically attack the lady for reasons best known to the sender.

Snake Venoms Share Similar Ingredients
Venoms from different snake families may have many deadly ingredients in common, more than was previously thought. A study published in the online open access journal BMC Molecular Biology has unexpectedly discovered three-finger toxins in a subspecies of the Massasauga Rattlesnake, as well as evidence for a novel toxin genes resulting from gene fusion.
A cocktail of recognized venom toxin sequences was detected in the library, but the venom also contained three-finger toxin-like transcripts, a family of poisons thought only to occur in another family of snakes (Elapidae).

Snake's bite puts a local family through an ordeal
Bachman said Elly emerged from the bushes with three droplets of blood surrounding her ankle. Hospital nurses looked at the injury and incorrectly concluded that Elly's leg was fractured. (watch out for those SC nurses, LOL).At about 7:45 p.m., after a series of X-rays, a doctor examined Elly's leg, which at that point was purple up to her knee, and confirmed that it was a snake bite. Elly was given antivenin intravenously and transported to Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, where she would spend the next eight days and undergo three surgeries to release fluid built up on her calf muscle.(does the term Fasciotomy come to mind?)

Snakebite Antivenoms Come Unstuck
Snake bite antivenoms contain antibodies that can agglutinate human red blood cells, shows new research by Costa Rican scientists. However, the same research reveals that pepsin digestion or ion-exchange chromatography fractionation can remove the agglutinating antibodies.
Leon and colleagues went on to see if they could reduce the agglutination of red blood cells by either treating or further fractionating their IgG antivenom preparations. They found that the addition of â-propiolactone to the antivenoms had no effect, but that both pepsin digestion and fractionation by ion-exchange chromatography using a basic quaternary ammonium cellulose membrane reduced the agglutination.

Snakebite prompts examination of procedures
Norma Jean Brearley, walking barefoot, was rolling her trash can to the curb the afternoon of June 5 when she accidentally ran over a baby rattlesnake and was bitten. But when Brearley got to Kaiser Richmond, there was no antivenin.CroFab, the rattlesnake antivenin of choice, comes in powdered form and must be "reconstituted," which can take from 20 minutes to well over half an hour. There is no formal protocol in Contra Costa County regarding the destination hospital for snakebite victims and how much antivenin each hospital must stock, and a quick search of other emergency systems in the state reveals they do not have such special protocols either, Barger said.

Snakebite reaction causes death
A Ridgeway woman died last week from what doctors are calling a severe allergic reaction to a snakebite.A state medical examiner reviewed the case and doctors told the family that it “likely was an extremely rare allergic reaction to the venom. They said ordinarily in a worst case scenerio, a copperhead bite would cause a loss of limb. They said she would have had to have been bitten by 20 snakes at the same time to have caused her death,” “Another possible scenerio is that at some point in her life she had a bee sting or other insect bite that deposited an enzyme” which the snake venom interacted with, causing the extreme reaction. The poisonous snakes in this area are copperheads, timber rattlesnakes and canebrake rattlesnakes, he said.
“The poison from these snakes can cause certain people a lot of problems but an average healthy adult human should be able to survive a bite of either of these with no medical attention,” Boyce said.

Snakebite victim's family sues
-As a woman bitten by a rattlesnake during a church service in London struggled to breathe, hospital employees made derogatory comments about her religious beliefs rather than providing proper care, contributing to her death, a lawsuit charges. The case arises from the Nov. 5, 2006, death of Linda F. Long, 48, a London homemaker. Police said at the time that Long was handling a yellow timber rattler during a service at East London Holiness Church when the snake bit her on the right cheek. After being taken into the hospital at 8:09 p.m., Long said she was having trouble breathing, and asked for oxygen. Hospital employees gave her a portable, oscillating fan as they allegedly "snickered and made derogatory comments" to employees -- and Long's family -- about the religious beliefs and circumstances under which she was bitten.

Their ears are sensitive enough to not only “hear” the prey approaching, but also to allow the brain, i.e., the auditory system, to localize the direction it is coming from.

Stanford snake venom study shows that certain cells may eliminate poison
Stanford, Calif. -- Death by snakebite is horrible. The immediate pain of the bite is followed by swelling, bruising and weakness, then sweating or chills, with numbness, nausea, blurred vision and possibly convulsions before it's all over. Such misery is produced by a veritable witches' brew of toxins in snake venom.
It's long been thought that the body's own immune system, rather than reducing the symptoms, may make things worse. But now researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine have shown that the immune system really does side with the victim, at least in four kinds of venom that were used in their experiments. Their findings will be published in the July 28 issue of Science.

Sub-standard Drug Forces Closure of Anti-dote Service
The Koshi Zonal Hospital has stopped treatment for snake-bite after it found that the medicine it has received is sub-standard. The hospital receives 10 to 15 snake-bite patients everyday.
Suspicion arose over the quality of the anti-snake bite venom after the doctors in the hospital had to administer as many as 211 vials of anti-dote on a 25-year-old patient when just 25 vials of the medicine should have been enough.

Tampa Postman OK After Getting Fang Mail From Likely Rattler
Joe Pittman, a registered nurse at the hospital and a snakebite specialist for the Florida Poison Control Center, administered pain medication to Arango but no antivenin because Arango's symptoms weren't severe. He considered keeping Arango overnight to ensure he was in good health. Pittman said Arango identified the snake that bit him – brown with yellow spots – by indicating a photograph of an eastern diamondback rattlesnake. In Florida, bites from these snakes cause the most fatalities, he said.
"It's not the first time I've heard of a snake in a mailbox," Pittman said, noting that snakes will seek a high perch after rain. "Snakes can get into amazing places. They'll flatten their bodies right out."

Texas tries to control invasion of exotic snakes
And beginning April 1, any person in Texas possessing or offering for sale any venomous snake not native to Texas or any of five species of non-native constrictors will have to obtain a permit from the state.
Acting on a mandate from the 2007 session of the Legislature, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission this past month adopted rules creating a "controlled exotic snake permit."
Under terms of the regulations, any person possessing or transporting a venomous snake not native to Texas, a green anaconda, or any of four species of python (African rock, Asiatic rock, reticulated, southern African) must buy an annual permit from TPWD.
Private owners of the regulated species will be required to annually purchase a $20 "recreational controlled exotic snake " permit.

However, thanks to the availability of antivenom, together with widespread educational efforts and heightened media attention, only about a dozen deaths from North American crotalid snakebites are reported each year. ( I can see the 12 Crotalid deaths, however, the almost 5000 venomous bites per year is suspicious. And the government agencies web site just happens to be down, so I can not research the figures. Humm.....I wonder what would happen if someone went to the web to find the phone number of their poison control center in an emergency ???? Cro )

The snakes are here
What makes the Mojave rattlesnake unique is that, like black mambas and cobras, the venom is neurotoxic, Banashek said. That means it can potentially alter the nervous system of a person who is bitten. As a member of the pit viper family, they can lunge and hit their prey as it's moving by - sensing it through their tongues - rather than striking downward like a cobra.

TV's Wild bunch
Bear Grylls can turn elephant dung into a refreshing drink.I'm certainly not a person who relishes eating yak eyeballs or goat testicles, but it is part of survival.Snake all taste pretty much the same. A few weeks ago, I caught a big one and ate that straight away, just raw. It's sort of blood and guts and meat.
Dr Brady Barr describes himself as lucky. Watching his TV show, Dangerous Encounters With Brady Barr, he's more than a little crazy too. While the python bite didn't kill him, danger is at the core of his show and despite "I'm scared" being one of his favourite lines, you can tell he thrives on it. "We were in the Congo and we had a group of pygmies guiding us," he deadpans, "and they just thought we were a bunch of folks from the States who didn't know what we were doing. But then we came across a gaboon viper, a really deadly snake, the longest of any deadly snake, and these guys [the pygmies] were terrified of it and I just ran up there and grabbed it. Man, they just thought I was the toughest man on the planet and I was their best friend." ( Strange, I wonder why does Barr think the Gaboon is the longest venomous snake ?? Forget the old folk tales about snakes hypnotizing their prey. The tentacled snake from South East Asia has developed a more effective technique. The small water snake has found a way to startle its prey so that the fish turn toward the snake's head to flee instead of turning away. What to do in the event of snakebite
For the doctor, it is important to get the right tools to handle snakebite. “In Pakistan, a supply of 10cm glass test tubes that are new, clean, and dry, are vital. These are inexpensive and allow accurate coagulation tests to be taken by the bedside, which is the key indication if anti-snake venom (ASV) is required in a viper bite. If the blood is still liquid after being undisturbed for 20 minutes, then ASV is required,” Ian disclosed. It is important to remember that cobra and krait victims actually die because they stop breathing! “If you keep them breathing with a resuscitation bag, particularly if helped by improvised nasopharyngeal airways improvised from size 5 rubber endotracheal tubes, the victim will survive,”

Woman bitten by copperhead snake
A Lancaster woman almost died from a copperhead snake bite, and experts say such bites are on the rise in North Carolina.
At first, doctors thought it was an allergic reaction to a bug bite. When the pain got worse and her liver failed, they sent her to Carolinas Medical Center.
After surgery on her hand to drain the venom and eight days in the hospital, doctors confirmed she had been bitten by a copperhead snake.
(Humm...A fasciotimy to drain vemom ?? And now she has lost the feeling in her hand...)

Wonderful stories from the ‘snake man’ of Wellsville
“Twentynine years ago, I found a hollowedout cavity in some soft earth made by a female black rat snake. In it were 16 eggs. But by the next day, a bulldozer had crushed the nest. All but one of those eggs were broken. I took that egg home, created a sawdust nest for it in an aquarium and watched it for weeks. Ives also told me about Pennsylvania rattlesnake hunts in which he participated. Unlike those Texas hunts in which hundreds of snakes are killed, these are carefully controlled. The snakes must be carefully captured alive, measured and marked so that records may be kept of their distribution. Then after the contest, the snakes are returned to where they were found.

World's first universal herbal-based antidote discovered in Sarawak
Dr Patau Rubis claimed that the herbal antidote, derived from various leaves from the jungle and based on the traditional Bidayuh healing practices, could cure anyone who have been attacked or bitten by poisonous snakes, insects, bees or wasps or those who accidentally drink chemically-made poisons such as paraquat and weedkiller. "One cup of this herbal antidote has relieved four people from snake bites, wasp and caterpillar urine." Refusing to divulge the details of the ingredients for fear that outsiders will try to patent it, he said he had written to the Sarawak Health Department to conduct research on the herb and proposed that the Bau Hospital be the research centre. (I find stories like this interesting - what if this fellow has actually found a product that blocks venom receptor sites - just like a kingsnake does to be immune to snake venom ? )
