Description: Jerry G. Walls; Paperback; Buy New: $9.95 --
Though dangerous, rattlesnakes have a fascination beyond that of any other snakes. This book introduces Crotalus as living animals and briefly covers all the species, most illustrated in full color.

Nice photos. Text does not do enough to be of any value to the intermediate to advanced keeper. The taxonomy is questionable but his reasons for reassignment are laid out and not without merit. I bought this used off Amazon for $ 2.99 so I got what I paid for.

This has some great pics in it, but all of the information is very basic. There could be some more elaboration on the various species.

I have experience in herpetology and a degree in Biology, and I have to say that this book would be last on my list as a reference for a scientific paper. However, it is simple to read and has great photos, which lends its function as an adequate text for young readers or beginners in the field. Although the depth of the text is questionable, it does inspire a child-like curiosity for these creatures. Anyone looking for a professional text might refer to Klauber's two editions.

Another standard fare offered up by the folks at tfh.
Great photos, questionable taxonomic information and a text that should have remained unwritten.
The photos are the only great feature of the book.

I'm going to have to give this book a better review than my cohorts. The main reason being that there ARE NO OTHER books that cover captive care of rattlesnakes on the market. It has great photos and diagrams and for someone just getting into this hobby, it's a good starter book on rattlesnakes. HOWEVER, I do have a few qualms with the text (especially the taxonomy) and I can see how experienced herpetologists would have difficulty with it.

TFH pictures are great...

... but almost the entire text should be thrown out. It starts out referring to rattlesnakes as pets, and goes downhill from there.

This is a pretty good book for its price range. Walls says in the book that he personally doesn't believe in the Sistrurus nomenclature and renames all the Sistrurus as Crotalus. That kind of upset me as S. miliarius barbouri are my designated favorites. Overall, the pictures are quite good as well as the general quality of the information.
