I purchased Midwests 40" Gentle giant tongs at the national reptile breeders expo.
They are highly recommended by the many people who use them and I see why. The fear of doing harm to a snake with them is virtually gone.
The tongs feel sturdy and well ballanced but not heavy when used. I have yet to lose grip on a snake 2 feet long or more, however, snakes under
2 feet may be able to free themselvs due to the half inch gap left when the jaws shut but tongs should only be used on a snake that size as a last resort and for never more than a few moments.
The only other problem I have had with these was when the spring in the lower jaw broke.
But because Midwest has a lifetime warranty on all of their tongs I shipped it back at a cost of about 15$ shipping charge and they fixed the spring and in a few days I had it back.
If the spring had not broken I would have given it a higher rating, but it may have been a faulty spring. I will write another review if it breaks again.
For the most part, I like these tongs and I will continue to use them for quite a while.
My only suggestion is chose a size that fits your needs best. Know the species and conditions you may use them in. For cage use 40" or more may be too long and clumsey unless it is a very spacious cage.
A 25" tong can't get to a snake if its down a hole or up a tree. bolth of these situations may put you in harms way. Make a choice based on what you need.
By using these tongs you make a statement that says you are up to date with the newest equipment. It also says you care about the safety of the animal you are working with and anyone who loves these beautiful reptiles should do the same.
happy herping!

Tongs are a tool most keepers need from time to time. I use them if something spazzes out and hits the floor or for grabbing water bowls, In the field and need to grab something off the road fast, or before it makes it under cover, down a hole etc? Nothing works easier and safer than a good set of tongs . That being said, I'm not a tong freak, I prefer a hook, but in those circumstances these tongs KICK BUTT!
They arent snake killers like the "other" tongs.
Be careful and use your head and you shouldnt hurt any snakes with these. First time I used mine was on a psychotic little PNG Taipan, just to see how easily they worked on a lithe little firecracker - they worked flawless, and seem very well built.
My only advice, spend the extra cash and get the heavy tubes, I think it'll be worth it in the extra lifespan.

I am very impressed with my new gentle giant tongs! The first thing I did with them (after a thorough inspection) was try them out on my spastic little 4' C. atrox. They worked out great! The rubber coated top jaw adds friction to hold the snake put, and the polished bottom jaw provides a smooth surface for the ventral scales to slip on. The wide gripping surface prevents harm to the snake and she didn't "spaz out" like I was afraid she would. The construction is top notch! I definitely feel like this was money well spent.

First tongs I`ve ever used.

I ordered The 40" standard GG tongs with some hesitation as I have not used tongs before.
I have always worried about injury to the animal.
After two weeks and no tongs, I called Midwest.
I was told that due to a production revision there was a back order and delay in shipping. No problem. Two days later, I received a call from Midwest that my order had been sent.
When my order did arrive, not only did they send me the heavier guage anodized version, but also a very nice 40" cage hook for my inconvenience.
At first the tongs seemed a bit front end heavy. But after using them on a couple different animals I found them to be very easy to use and the Viridis and Ruber I used them on were quite at ease with them.
Final word. Very happy with the product and the service of Midwest Custom Products.
If your in the market for tongs, This is a very good choice.
