Great for the field!

Whether I'm in the lab or in the field, the Pillstrom tongs never failed me. Their jaws don't get caught by brush and weeds and can maneuver in tight spaces, unlike the wide jaws of other brands. Narrow jaws also come in handy when dealing with aquatic snakes, where water resistance of wide-jawed tongs results in escaped specimens. In addition to snakes, I've also used my Pillstroms with turtles and lizards without injuring the animals. I highly recommend the Pillstrom tongs! They're reilable, rugged, and will last forever.

Growing up in South Africa, I worked with a large number of dangerous snakes. From mambas to cobras and boomslangs and pythons, good handling equipment is imperative.
Pillstroms are the most sought after tongs by everyone in the know. I recently took a group of Americans to SA and had some instant converts to Pillstroms. They survive everything; I have had the same pair for 16 years!!
Just like learning to handle snakes, you need to learn how to use tongs, but that’s a given. Mfezi.com and all of its tours use exclusively Pillstrom Tongs. The best in the business for over 50 years!!

The Pillstrom tongs are the best in buisness. Robust and durable. If you know how to use a tong this tong is not to rough (which some say)- you get a feeling for how much pressure you need to use to capture a snake safely. Other brands might be good for a novice field herper - but if you want something that are built to last - a Pillstrom is a must!

The features of pillstrom are uncomparable to any other brand of tongs on the market. The solid construction and lack of wiering makes it easy to adjust pressure, which is the most important feature of a snake tong. Due to the ability to open and close the tong without the help of springs it will never jam in critical moments. There are no springs at the tong end that can get stuck in vegetation. It is also easy to fix problems without the need to send it away if something breaks. The performance of the tong is simply superior.
I have worked with several brands of tongs. I only use Pillstrom for fieldwork nowadays because it will outperform all other brands in every way. When working in cages there are other brands that can compare to Pillstrom due to the fact that it is unlikely that a tong will break or get jammed by vegetation when working in cages.

Dangerous in the hands of the novice

Pilstrom tongs are tough, durable machines with a scissorlike interlocking grip. They work very well to grab heavy things and swing them around without letting go, but in my opinion they are not the best tools for the keeper who wants to keep his or her snakes in good health. The shearing force that can be placed on a snake's spine and internal organs by the indented style jaws can cause severe injury.
Some suggestions for making these tongs safer include padding them out heavily with insulating foam and tape and using them only on the caudal third of the animal, not lifting the snake completely from the ground so that its weight remains partly supported. Elapids can be safely grabbed and lifted in the upper third of the body, but many crotalids have poorly anchored internal organs which can be forcefully displaced by too much pressure exerted midbody.
Dr. Pillstrom has this to say about learning how to use his tongs safely on snakes. "When I got a gun for my teenager son, to hunt Deer, I didn't just give him a gun and say "Go kill a Deer". I trained him the basics how to load the gun, how to aim the gun and then how to shoot it propely. When I gave him his first snake tong, I gave him instructions how to slide the stationary jaw under the snake, then squeeze the trigger gently just enough to hold the snake and then put it in a bag."
If you have learned a very delicate touch with this high powered tool and are experienced enough to never, ever panic and squeeze down far enough to bring the teeth of the tong together, you can use this product very effectively without injuring snakes. Many keepers do with great success. But my feeling is that there is little point in using an "overkill" power tool designed for hard squeezing if your intention is to use it gently. Save the power tools for power uses, and purchase one of the gentler flat jawed tong styles to use on your animals.
This isn't to say you shouldn't buy a set of Pillstrom tongs for your snake room. I find my Pillstroms absolutely invaluable for their strong grip in moving waterbowls full of smelly "snake presents" out of a cage without spilling. You stand a fair chance of yanking an uneaten dead rat out from under the coils of a big python with one of these; the other models would not perform nearly as well at these kinds of jobs. They are also used in zoos quite reliably to hand heavy pieces of meat to large
crocodilians. A pair of well padded Pillstroms is an excellent tool in the hands of the experienced keeper, because it is light enough to be used one handed with some agility and the grip is sure enough to secure the stronger elapids. Within their limitations, they are an excellent tool for the hot herp keeper.
For most uses in snake restraint, I would recommend the Gentle Giant tongs by Midwest which feature a softer grip that does not cause injury. Midwest also sells a rubber cushion for the Pillstrom model that will soften its grip considerably.
Summary of the Pillstrom tong, strengths and weaknesses:
Pillstrom summary:
Strengths - Strongest possible grip; can support a full waterbowl without spilling or be used to hand off a heavy food item. When properly modified and in the hands of an expert, a good tool for duelling with a large and bad tempered snake when serious restraint is required. Lightweight and strong, good for field uses, and can usually be repaired in the field when minor breakage occurs. Can be padded and made into a safer tool. Generally sturdy and durable; these tools can last many decades if the springs and pins are replaced regularly.
Weaknesses - Dangerous in the hands of the less experienced handler due to grip strength. Scissor style grip automatically places shearing force on one or two vertebrae on a snake's back, putting the animal at very high risk for injury if it struggles or if it is lifted off the ground. External cable design makes it vulnerable to minor breakages in the field, getting caught on branches, etc. Requires real skill to operate precisely without hurting the snake.
