Description: Carl H. Ernst; Paperback; Buy New: $20.37 --
Ernst examines some 20 poisonous reptiles found in North America. Each entry has a physical description of the reptile, information on the karyotype (the morphological characteristics of the chromosomes in a cell), the fossil record, and distribution and geographic variation. . . . There are paragraphs on habitat, behavior, reproduction, growth and longevity, food and feeding, venom and bites, predators and defense, and population. . . . The text is accompanied by a 50-page bibliography . . . and a glossary of 54 scientific terms. . . . An index of subjects and both scientific and popular names concludes the volume. This is a very good book for the price and remains standard reading for venomous enthusiasts.

Excellently detailed book!

An excellent book filled with all the minute details you might ever want to know about any of North America's venomous reptiles. At some points, the detail is a little overwhelming, like the listing of every single thing that each species has ever been known to eat. Hunting (foraging) and breeding behavior is equally well detailed. I bought my copy last year and took it on a six month deployment for something to read. I was glad I did.

I picked up a copy last year. It's a must have for anyone interested in North American venomous reptiles. It goes into great detail on each species with subheadings such as identification, range, reproduction, habitat, behavior, etc.. It also has some great charts and an identification flow chart for N.A. hots.
