Love & Disappointment

I bought this book for my husband who had heard about the book from other Herpetologists. His thoughts about Mr. Haast has changed extremely after reading the book. Mr. Haast has done some wonderful things and has survived to tell about it today. However, the disappointment comes in the fact that Mr. Haast plainly states that he doesn't care about the snakes. In my husbands own words "I loved the book, just disappointed in him (Haast).

COBRAS IN HIS GARDEN is an excellant book, and was an inspiration to me throughout my life with my own interest in venomous snakes. To say the very least, I own quite a bit to Mr. Haast, and his wife Nancy. If you get the chance to visit Bill Haast in Punta Gorda, you will most likely find him in his "garden", an acre and a half walled in rattlesnkae pit, complete with irragation system, and artificial turtle holes for the snakes. This worlds largest man made snake pit has several of Mr. Haast's favorate plants, and is mowed regularly by Nancy Haast. I look forward to someone writing another book about Mr. Haast, and his many projects, not all snake related. But until then, THIS BOOK IS GREAT! My autographed copy is the only book I own that is NEVER lent out.

I recently purchased a signed copy of this book off of Ebay for $50.00.
The fascinating accounts of Bill Haast's life are written in great detail. The stories of the symptoms he had during bites from kraits, king cobras and green mambas.
The book also discribes Bill's groundbreaking immunization experiment and how it has helped him survive the snakebites. A truely amazing book, though rather difficult to find!
If you wish to get this book, you should check Ebay every now and then. Aslo try doing a search on amazon.com that may yeild some results.
If you find this book, get it!

I got this book used for $20 years ago, at the time I had no cobras and was desperate for info on their care, so I read it like 6 times. It was of limited value to me, because my keeping approach is the opposite of Bill's, and I don't approve of the way he treats his animals. But the accounts of snake handling and the play by play details of his bites are fascinating. Not a book written for the hobbyist, it deals with snakes in a kind of dramatized, sensational way tailored for a popular audience. It's not a long book, and takes an afternoon to read. Worth the time it takes. It has some great pictures too, shame they aren't in color.

The book shed shed light on the "Real" Bill Haast. Bootlegger, Showman, and mad scientist.
Anything for money. The Best books on Haast are the court files in Miami Fl., Punta Gorda, Fl. and Salt lake City, Utah.

Excellent biography of legendary venom researcher
and snake handler Bill Haast. Details his growing
up, self-immunization, venom research, and reactions to envenomations, including writing down the effects of a blue krait bite as they were happening. Well worth your while.

I first read this book while flat on my back with pneumonia during 1973, in Keflavik, Iceland. The author was very descriptive and really pulls you into Bill's life. It inspired me to make the trek to the Miami Serpentarium (while it was still open in Miami) to meet this amazing man. Unfortunately, I don't have a copy of this work. Tells about his lifestyle with snakes

I thought it was a great book with very interesting pictures. Although the book was made in 1965 I do believe it is still good and talks about Bill Haast's growing up with snakes. Tells about how many times he had been bitten by venomous snakes (up to 1965) and what he did to treat them. Also talks about his family and serpentarium. A great find. I stumbbled on to this at my University's library.

Incredibly interesting and informative. Not only full of snake, venom, and bite information, but the story of the legend himself. This is not really a snake book, but definitely good reading IF you can find it. It's worth tracking down. It details Bill's early work in Polio serum research using cobra venom, the beginnings of the Miami Serpentarium and most of all, the first half of Bill's life- Remember this was written in 1965, when Bill was only 55! It also contains a wealth of information about bite symptoms and early theories in treatment.
Try doing searches for used and out of print books on the net, then send out a few emails. amazon.com found a copy for me but they wanted $60 for it, I ended up finding another, signed copy for $36.
