A $4 golf club could do the same thing!

Time owned: 0 to 3 months

I just received my $128 stumpripper. What a disappointment. This is little more than a golf club with a different shaped head. You could buy a used golf club in a thrift store and save $124! The "company" consists of two people in an apartment in Houston, TX. You can see this for yourself by looking up their address on google earth: 1500 Bayarea Blvd, Houston TX. 77058. I received very little info from them during the purchase process. I was told it would ship in 2 weeks, it turned out to be a month. I thought it was odd that there was no picture of the tool on their website, but if they let perspective buyers see the product, I doubt many would buy. I was charged $110.50 for the tool and $17.50 for shipping. I noticed on the package it plainly states that shipping cost only $7.53. Fuhrman was, apparently, at one time a great product at a great price. I think that time has passed. Do yourself a big favor if you are thinking of buying the "legendary stumpripper," get the golf club at the thrift store. It will do 90% of the same things and you will be $124 ahead!

The best field hook available
|
Time owned: more than 12 months
|
I've owned a stump ripper for a few years now.
I have flipped everything from concrete slabs to Car hoods with it with no problems at all.
I think some folks that did reviews of this hook
don't quite know how to use one. If you have a right-handed hook (XXXAl-Ti5/44COR) hold the hook
in your right hand, with the hook resting on the ground and pointing to the left. Notice that the hook lays flat on the ground and the tip is tapered so as to slip easily under a snake.
Scoop up the snake by slipping the hook under it with a right to left sweeping motion. Works every time! This is a GREAT field hook!!

The best field collecting snake hook I ever used!

Time owned: more than 12 months

The Furmont Stump Ripper was my second snake hook that I purchase back in 1979. I have use it many, many times over the past years and it has never fail me once. This hook is made with a very heavy duty shaft and has a almost indesructible hook made of 5/16 space grade titanium. Over the years a few companies have copy this desigh but in my opinion, have never match Furmont excellent quality.
To obtain this product is fairly easy. Go to their website and either email them or call for their Reptile Equiment Catalog. Their customer service is very good, and the best part is they except credit cards. Furmont Repitle equiment is presently use by more than 250 zoos and aquariums, 100 universities and over 2000 other institution on all seven continents.

Stump Ripper - Outstanding Field Hook
|
Time owned: more than 12 months
|
I bought my Stump Ripper back in 1981 as a college student. This tool is perfect for turning logs and rocks. I don't think you can break the titanium tip! I own the "stronger" double shaft model (steel shaft lined). The curvature of the tip is also designed for pinning. You can get different lengths, grips, etc. I think they even make a "lefty" for those that need it. In the 22 years that I've had mine, it has never failed. I did send it back to the factory to get a new grip installed, but that was after 15 years of use! I bought several of these as equipment for fieldtrips with the biology classes at my college.

I have used this hook with impressive results for both field and in house work. the shape of hook usually has the snake balancing nicely on it for the most part handle, length is far enough away to provide reaction time for hook climbers. lastly is a strong, dependable hook I will get another shortly, as minor cracks are finally showing up around the shank of hook, not that I believe is in any danger of failure, it is just the way I do things. I reccommend this hook to any one for most any activity as it applies to snake handling

Lightweight and strong, highly recommended, but hard to find

Time owned: more than 12 months

I like this product a lot; I chose the shortest possible size with the straight "L" style hook instead of the longer models with the odd looking bends in them. This hook has done yeoman duty turning over sheets of tin, logs, etc. I wouldn't actually rip up any stumps with mine because that seems like a pretty rotten thing to do to some poor snake's home, but it is an excellent tool for turning heavy things over as well as picking up snakes. Unfortunately this company is a bit hard to get hold of and doesn't seem to have a web site that I can find which sells their products. I bought mine at a herp show.

An excellent hook, probably the best there is.

Sorry I didnt post the website , but then again the hook is not on their website, they mostly deal in hi tech animal surveil./observe equipt. The number in Texas is 281 474 1388.
The good points: Supposedly unbendable pole. Maybe I believe it. Lighter weight than any hook Ive tried (excluding mini graphite hooks) fantastic polished unscratchable titanium hook (mine was shipped with a red plastic cover over the tip, just pull it off)
Hook is embedded into pole part with an epoxy so strong you can actually hang from the hook by the handle from a tree, not that you should.
paint job on handle is dark orange with a shine like taht of the new midwest gentle grabber.
the guys at Fuhrman are very good to deal with. the hook's price is reasonable. Shipped out quickly.
the bad point: the tip of the hook has a custom bend near the tip which looks odd and confused me. But it does apparetntly have a purpose: it halps one to neck a snake against the ground, and to get under its body too. I have gotten used to this extra little bend, The only thing I dont like about it is that it is different, so when you pick up the hook the first few times you have to adjust your mind b/c one has old habits, but I am used to it now, and I HIGHLY recommend this product !!!!!
