After 4+ years of looking, I got this book this past weekend. Paid $120, and couldn't be happier. Great information, and it covers many unusual species. Highly recommended book.

My only problem is with the measurements in the book. Myself being a dummie American living in the past, all the measurements are in metric which is fine but instead of being in cm, mm, or meters it is scattered around and every snake is is in a different measurement. I can grasp metters, and cm if it is small but the milimeters really throughs me off when they say for example a Bitis xeropaga is 445 milimeters, thats a lot of little bitty increments and would be much easier if it were x amount of cm or x.x meters. All in all still a great book, I just need a measuring device in milimeters;) The best I have seen on The Dangerous Snake of Africa...Eric

This book is a good example of how a field guide should be laid out. It has great photos, maps and ID notes, and a very good first aid section. The introduction and front papers are very well laid out with excellent directions for anyone encountering snakes anywhere in Africa. I am very happy to finally have this book in my collection of field guides. Well worth the cover price if you can still get it for that.

Why 5 out of 5?
Well written, logically laid out, excellent amount of detail, very up to date for an off the shelf publication, concise, good photos and ID notes, very good first aid section for a field guide. Add to this the fact that this book is cheap (e.g. not sold at the normally rediculous specialist/scientific prices that have been eating my Student loan recently) and you cannot really go wrong. If you are just interested in snakes then buy this. If your actually after a publication of this sort then ditto. Hell, the fact that your reading this review means you should have a copy.
To be less frivilous though, this really is a very good book indeed.
