The most comprehensive program of its kind.

I have worked with this program on and off for several months now. Early versions did indeed exhibit some rather frustrating "undocumented features"! I really pushed this provider with my queries, complaints, and suggestions. Dan Pleva, of Hungry Herps, always responded timely with input and any necessary patches. I was even supplied with an additional CD update while I was still in the evaluation period. The support I received from Hungry Herps was second to none.
The current version is working quite nicely and I was comfortable enough with it to spend a week or so entering 18 months of historical data. Some new additions that will realise fruition soon will make the program even easier to tailor to one's personal needs.
The tracking modules are wonderful for quick glances at the histories of breeding, feeding, shedding, etc. All this data is also available in the report modules.
I prefer to enter my own species data and this is much more user friendly with the current version.
Over the years, I have tried every program available for herpetoculture and I can comfortably state that Hungry Herps has no real competition. There is simply no other software that I am aware of that will facilitate the commercial breeder of different types of reptiles. Moreover, it will only get better as users offer additional input and ideas.

Worked fine for me!

I haven't had any trouble entering new records. Most forms have very few required fields. Species only requires Country, apart from the name!
The City is necessary when creating a new Habitat, since environment ranges are different across an entire Country. The species environment info has to be accurate for the monthly habitat label for the new species. There are so many habitat records already in the list, though, that I've only had to create 3 for my animals. The habitat labels are a big help to me since I can't really keep track of the natural ranges for each of my animals as seasons change.
As for setting up an Amazon Tree Boa as a Lizard, I agree it would be better if the lists were hierarchical, but I know my animals and don't have a problem with that. I actually deleted the families, suborders and species I don't handle - so posting a new inventory animal is real fast.
All of the other features save me time and money, and are not counter-intuitive. There's help everywhere - if I don't know what a field is for, I just hover over it with my mouse and I get some help.
I've been using this software for a while, and the company has continued to make it better, primarily based on customer feedback. There were some bugs, but all software has bugs. The company sent out a fix. Maybe you should contact them. Their customer service is very good, and they really care about helping herpers and our industry.
Just my $.02, anyway...
God Bless America!

Good idea, poor execution

I had high hopes after reading the site, and seeing the product at Daytona. Unfortunatly these were dashed after spending a couple of days trying to use this poorly debugged product. More attention should have been spent in testing the software before the release, it is very buggy and quite confusing at times to use.
The best feature of this product is that at least you do not have to pay for it until you finish the evaluation period.
Anyway, some general comments below:
A previous review indicates "This product makes it simple to keep track of ALL my Herp records. The data entry screens are very intuitive - clearly this was Written By Herpers!!"
I would agree, except that it is quite difficult to enter information without the program generating an error and not saving the data you enter.
My problem started with the install, I selected my "D" Drive, the program installed but refused to run untill I moved it to the C drive, annoying for me but not fatal.
I then looked through the available species of snakes, looking for an Amazon Tree Boa, I couldn't find it, so I added it using the designated form. It took three attempts, if you do not fill in all the data required the program generates an error and looses the information you enter.
A set of lists are supplied to supposidly help you describe your animal, the top level being snakes, lizards etc. Unfortunalty, when you select one item in one list (such as snakes) it does not filter the list of entries in the lower levels, these list should be heirarchical! This means you could enter Lizard, Amazon tree boa as a valid entry.
When you enter locale information, it asks you to name the town as part of the information, if you do not, it enters the default (it does not leave it blank). How many species are limited to one town?
The navigation was so frustrating and un-intutive, I found the program to be unusable, the bugs just compounded my expectations.
I will not be registering my copy, back to cards, or write my own.

An Excellent product for those of us in the Business of Herping

This product makes it simple to keep track of ALL my Herp records. The data entry screens are very intuitive - clearly this was Written By Herpers!!
In addition to the detailed reports (which I use to Deduct my Herping Expenses) - I LOVE the Habitat Labels. I just print them each month and stick them on my tanks...and I ALWAYS know just what the Native Environment would be for all my herps! It's simple to keep up.
I tried other software products, but they DON'T come with ANY INFORMATION. Their Help Systems are pretty hard to follow, and with No support information, I had to give up on them. Hungry Herps came with Reference Data on 125 Species (including cycling temps, gestation periods, clutch sizes, etc.) 13 Herp Diseases and Treatments and over 100 Native Habitats (for the monthly labels).
It's easy to add more, but I haven't had to enter any reference info yet!
I also Love the Hungry Herps [F-2] option. Since I enter each animal's feeding data, it's easy to click [F-2] each day and see Which Animals Should Be Fed!! It even totals up aggregates of each type and size of rat or mouse I need to thaw out or buy!
The best thing, though, is the reports. I can print Invoices and Customer Statements, as well as various Expense Reports and when I go to H&R Block, my tax refund makes it all worth the effort! I never knew how much money I'd been spending on my animals.
