THis is the best small hook I've ever used. It's light weight and strong. I use it with small rattlers and vipers.

An invaluable tool, a must have!

Words cannot express how much I love this hook. It's lightweight, durable, and professional looking. For the 25 bucks, it's a steal. By comparison, the standard hook feels like a load of bricks and I actually find it awkward to switch between the two...this is definately my most used hook in my collection.

Great Hook But ...
|
Time owned: more than 12 months

This is a great little hook with very little weight. However, the very small size makes gripping the very slender handle a little difficult for someone with big mitts like mine. The Boss loves it and we have two for her use with the Dusky Pigmies that we keep. I prefer to use the Midwest Small Hook with the larger wooden handle. With her preference for these and my preference for the wooden handles, it is not too difficult to tell which hook rack in our "hot room" is "his" and which is "hers".

my #1 tool
|
Time owned: 6 to 12 months

Small hots are strong, light and quick, so it makes sense to use a tool with the same qualities.
Without a doubt, this is the most used tool in my hot building.
The size is perfect.
Small enough for neonates, but large enough for a wide range of animals- how large you want to go with this hook is up to your comfort and skill level, only you can make that choice.
Midwest says it's for animals under 1 lb. but I routinely use it for larger.
Best parts are the super lightweight, high strength and fair price.
I have 3 of these and keep them scattered around the room so I always have one close.

my favorite hook!

light and quick, excellent for small cobras, mambas and rattlebutts. Midwest says it's for snakes under 1 pound, but I routinely use it on larger animals.
My only suggestion is buy 2, 1 for your hot room and 1 for your car.

Strong and ultra light, a superior performer.

This strong but ultra lightweight style of hook is my hands down favorite to use on any snake that weighs in under 2-3 pounds. The manufacturer recommends it for use only on snakes under a pound, but I like the very light weight (about 1 ounce!) so much that I use it on all but my largest snakes whose bodies won't fit into the curve of the hook.
The ultra light weight allows you to juggle even the fastest and most cantankerous species with real agility. This product is my first choice to manage the large collection of fast and very aggressive adult boomslangs which I am currently holding for venom research, because it allows a much faster response time than any of the longer, heavier hooks.
I really appreciate the way it performs with slippery young green mambas and snappy baby elapids. A pair of these hooks, or a hook and a hand on the tail depending on your comfort level and the individual snake, allows for effective management of snakes that are usually too fast and slippery to keep on a hook.
Handling fast and nasty venomous snakes such as mambas, boomslangs and cobras is of course a dangerous undertaking that only experienced keepers should attempt. Simply buying this or any other product does not automatically give you the skill to use it safely. But if you do have the skill and the need to manage venomous snakes, this product is really invaluable.
The only other hook on the market of this quality is the Furman/Fuhrmont titanium line. Those are excellent products, but they are more expensive and considerably harder to find. This new hook from Midwest is the equal of the Furman ultralight, and is really excellent for use on small to mid sized elapids, fast and snappy little vipers and the agile arboreals.
If you don't already have at least two of the ultralight style hooks in your snake room, definitely pick up a couple of these. Highly recommended!
