I have work with 40" copperhead using this tool and it worked fine. It is great to use on small rattlers, corals, even medium moccasins work fine with this tool.

Quite useful for smaller snakes

Finally a pinning tool that you can actually use on smaller snakes without squishing them! I like this little toy a lot and have found it quite useful when nabbing up some of my littler ones for assist feeding or medication.
I don't like using any small, narrow pinner on larger snakes because of the potential for injury to the animal. But a small lightweight snake can be pinned with a tool like this with very little risk to the animal. Of course there is always some risk both to the animal and to the handler, and this can be mitigated considerably by using the pinner just long enough to slip a properly sized tube over the snake's head instead of gripping directly. The snake can easily be slid backwards out of the tube into your secure grip from there, if you need to do oral procedures or venom extraction.
The one downside to this tool is that it is less precise and balanced than the minihook alone or the pinner alone. I've been pretty spoiled by the lightweight, precision balance of the minihooks and I never want to go back to using a clunky handled steel hook again. This new combination tool is lightweight but the balance is just a little off. I think I would have preferred to buy the pinner separately for a better balanced tool. Still it is convenient to have a tool handy that combines both functions in one so you don't have to go hunting into the next room for the other one.
Overall this is quite a good product and I'd recommend it. It has been performing admirably at the vet clinic with our smaller venomous patients.
