Steve Irwin 1962-2006
|
Steven Robert Irwin was born in February 1962. In 1970 his father moved his family to Queensland to start a small reptile park, and at the age of nine Steve was already participating in the capture of crocodiles. Primarily, Steve was a conservation enthusiast, but was even been credited with discovering a new species of turtle. Steve used his well known television show as a venue to advance the cause of reptile conservation. "The Crocodile Hunter" television show was first filmed in 1992. His park, Australia Zoo, is also responsible for several captive breeding programs of endangered reptile species, which are proving successful. Addendum: Steve Irwin died on Sept. 4, 2006 when a stingray barb pierced his chest during the filming of a documentary off the coast of Australia.
