im looking for a good beginner hot besides a copperhead, soon im going to be working with hots at my local zoo instructed by experts, so no need to worry about me just jumping into this, I also visit another forum with a herpetologist working with alot of venomous and he instructed me to come here and check the place out, looks good alot of info i like that.

There is no better beginner snake then the copperhead. Most adjust well to captivity and they have a more forgiving venom if there were to be an accident. Not sure why you are opposed to using the copper. The Pigmy is also not a life treating species, but does not adjust as well to captivity and gives you very little training for larger hots. The cottonmouth is probably the next step up the ladder, but they are more for an intermediate keeper with a little experience. I would suggest strongly you avoid any exotic species until you have more experience under your belt. In the event of an accident, local physicians will not know how to treat the bite and proper anti-venom may be difficult to come by.

Im going to have to agree with sceniccityreptiles on this one, starting out with a copperhead is nothing to be ashamed of. Better to start out with a semi-docile snake with reletively weak venom than to screw up with a more deadly species. Although, if you think you're up to it you can try a rattlesnake (NOT a diamond back) or a cotton mouth.

theres actually a few snakes that might be "decent"starter hots.the thing is,they are not always recommended by others.
a copperhead is actually a pretty neat snake to keep.if you don't like regular southerns, try a trans-pecos.they are beautiful, but they will cost you a little more.also broadbands are pretty neat.
good luck with everything!-adam

the copperheads I have worked with I wouldnt really class as good beginner snakes, they have all been snappy and aggressive the one in my collection at the moment is particularly insane, the good thing is forgiving venom but even then you may end up without a digit and in serious pain, I guess when your talking native US species then they are the best to keep though.

I for one love copperheads! For me as far as Hots go, its not how deadly they are for it to be "cool" to keep it! I love the patters and all out caomouflage they have in their natural habitat! Just BEAUTIFUL!!!
