I have a few diffirent species of venomous snakes that are local to where I live. So I know the hospital has antivenom, but was curious how I would go about getting it my self. Also what is the shelf life of antivenom and approximate cost per vial? Any help would be appreciated.

Ryan:
The current cost of CroFab is about $1650/vial. Even a minimal envenomation will take ~6 vials, so do you have $10,000 to spend? Ahhh and don't forget that the A/V expires in 3 years, technically speaking.
Have fun,
Al

Well then this brings up my next question. If antivenom is so costly than how do some people on this page expect a single hobbyist to be able to afford to do such a thing? The way people have made it sound on other post is "why shouldn't we?" well thats obviouse answer. We shouldn't because that would cost way to much money. My answer to other post that have been made asking should we or should we not is simply; Unless we a millionares than no we shouldn't. Sorry for rambling but I had been given a the wrong idea about the prices of antivenom. Thank for the assistance.

What most people are referring to is the possession of exotic antivenoms which few hospitals keep in stock. In general(with few exceptions), exotic antivenoms are vastly cheaper (South African serum is $40/vial and Costa Rican serum is $25/vial) and often much more effective.
I would not recommend that you keep crofab either. Years ago, when Wyeth a/v was available, is was quite a bit cheaper, but still around $250/vial.

Hi:
All this leads to another point. If you get bit by a domestic snake your hospital bill will be huge, just from the antivenom. Better hope your insurance company will cover it... Not all do since it was a "captive" snake.

Why is CroFab so much more expensive than exotics? Ok, I understand that CroFab is wide spectrum and is a designer drug, to be less hazardous to the recipient.
So I am wondering, are the exotic anitvenoms less expensive because they are produced in other countries (Is it the whole American prescription drug thing)? Do you order them from international sources?
Or are they less expensive because they are single species specific? And thus easier to produce? Even than Wyeth?

Joy: One would think it's a "profit" driven reason. Protherics would not be bothered if they did not make lots of $$ Antivenom is really an "Orphan drug" That is a drug that has a very small group of people need. No mass market.
I just read on Dy Fry's website that SAVP will discontinue antivenom production soon. They figure that who cares if 600 to 1000 Africans die per year because there is not Snakebite antivenom when 1000 per day die of HIV/AIDS, so they will work on HIV drugs instead.
Got the picture?
Sad but true,
Al

Well..ya could have been worse. It seems the hospital made some $$ on the CroFab too. Maybe good to bring your own for half the price. What was the local damage to the bite area?
Good Luck,
Al
