Any of the Sony digital camcorders are pretty good for better than average home movie photage. They are light weight, good quality, and realitively cheap. I have used these in a lot of my herp movies and they are really convienient and good. It just so happens I suck at narrating while catching snakes, lol. Let's just say O'Shea has little to worry about me taking his job. Hi8mm is good but Digital 8mm is much better quality. I took about 70 hours of timber rattlesnake photage this past summer while radio tracking them and have no complaints.
If you are looking for professional stuff, then both Canon and Sony have professional movie cameras.
Just look around at some camera magazines for more help.

Write me an email on what you're looking at doing and your budget for stuff. Film is my major at school and I'm in the process of making a rattlesnake documentry. I can give you advice on how to do good quality stuff on a low budget.
