If there is such a thing, I am looking to move up to elapids after working with the vipers for close to 2 years. This is definatly something I'm not running out and doing tomorrow, I'm simply starting my research. I'm thinking of a monocled cobra, but I'm really not familiar with the elapids. Any ideas on a good one to start with? Thanks for any help.

I would think a monocled is the best for a first cobra. but all cobras are way diferent then vipers by the way they act the way you handel them and there care. I would say that would be the best. just stay away from forest cobras till you have plenty of expearence with cobras.

Good advice...Nothing from Africa
I would recommend a Sri Lanken(sp) or a Spectacled Cobra. I'm not fond of Monacles. Find some nice fiesty racers to work with to get the feel of what you'll be up against.
Good Luck,
Al

I would not rule out everything from Africa. Naja haje & N. annulifera are generally as manageable as N. naja. I certainly wouldn't recommend any of the others. The melanoleuca are bears, the nivea are way too hot, the spitters take extra gear & super concentration. And forget Pseudohaje.
And yes, I have kept all of the above.

Hmmmm... the problem with annulifera and haje is that they get a lot bigger than most Asiatics. Dealing with an upset 8 footer is a different kettle of fish from dealing with an upset 5 footer - you need a lot more space.
Also, if you don't mind wearing goggles/face shields for working with spitters, then N. pallida makes a good first cobra - a lot of them seem to calm down quite nicely, and they are of course specatcularly beautiful. It really depends on how much you mind being spat at - personally, I find spitters a complete pain in the backside, but I know others who don't seem to mind.
Cheers,
Wolfgang

True...but eight foot Africans are not all that common. That's the top end of the scale, if I'm not mistaken. As far as room, I would hope that the fellow would have plenty of space if he decides to get into Naja, regardless of the variety. We certainly agree on the spitters.

Hi, wouldn't the best option be to get the cobra he would like but as a juvenile, 12 mths old? As the snake grows so will his experience he will also learn the animals temprament as he goes along. As long as he is aware of how large the animal can grow to and that a suitable enclosure and a room large enough to handle a adult cobra is available. Any comments?
regards
John

Sorry, my post is a some odd few days late, but he hasn't replied to any of the posts... So, here's mine.
I agree with what John (Rabies) had to say. I believe that starting from maybe 12 months of age is alot better than just jumping into it with snakes that people say are easier to deal with in the cobra species. I have learned alot from my animals that I have had awhile. You can eventually learn a snake and the actions that they take. I "highly" recommend using the idea that John had said in his post. It's kinda hard to learn experience with an adult cobra and even more dangerous in my opinion. If I were you I would start with a juvenile, maybe a little older, as I did when I started. Good luck and I hope some of the posts helped you out!!
