There has been some recent discussion regarding the practice of deleting posts from the forums by myself (primarily) and some of the other website managers.
First I would like to repost the Mission Statements that are listed under "About the SHHS".
The main goals of the Southeastern Hot Herp Society are:
1. To provide a forum for the information exchange on the ecology, natural history and behavior of venomous reptiles.
2. To promote conservation and protection of venomous reptiles.
3. To encourage responsible animal husbandry by venomous reptile keepers.
4. To educate the general public to the benefits of venomous reptiles in nature.
5. To serve as a clearinghouse of information on venomous reptiles.
As you can clearly see, there is nothing in there that promises free speech. This is a website that is available to the international public at large. Many of us give lectures to school kids and recommend our site for educational purposes to teachers. Those actions clearly fall in line with all of the mission statements above. Allowing profanity and rude behavior does not. I routinely remove posts that I feel are out of line, rude, distateful or profane. Sometimes when I remove those posts, there are other following posts which answer those ones which no longer fit into the ongoing thread. Occasionally I remove those threads too so as to not confuse the subsequent readers. Generally this has nothing at all to do with my personal opinions on the factual or opinion content of the post. In example, I am personally against the process of creating and selling venomoids. However, I do not delete the threads about them because the topic itself is not in direct opposition with our mission statements. Sometimes, tempers run high and words get out of hand. I then remove the offensive posts. If the situation warrants, I usually email the content of the removed post to the poster and allow them to rephrase and repost. Obviously this is not an option with anonymous posting.
We go out of our way to make this a learning sharing atmosphere regardless of the age of the reader without unduly restricting what people say here. A little self-control is all we ask. If proper behavior in a public forum is too much to ask, then perhaps our forums are not the place for you. I feel that this is not censorship, or communism as has been suggested, but merely requiring people to behave themselves like civilized human beings in a public place.

Technically, the TOPIC of venomoids is not in direct oppostion with the above mission statements. However, creating and selling venomoids absolutely IS in direct oppostion with EVERY mission statement listed above! I agree that those threads should be left alone though, but venomoids shouldn't be allowed in the classifieds.
