Being stress free, as already brought out, is probably the closest we're going to get to the snakes being "happy". While in the wild every animal has to be on the lookout for predators. Once they're used to their environment in captivity they're not in the same danger as in the wild. Do they sit in their enclosures and think "Crap, I'm bored"? Or "Man I need a woman!"? Not likely. The reproductive urge is brought on by chemicals released from the opposite sex. As long as the animal's food supply is continuous and it's environment is maintained, the animals survive.
Now. If I were a snake and I had my choice I'd take being in the wild even with the risks of predators, or being squashed on the road(I'd look both ways), or hit in the head with a shovel(no offense Wally!). I'd be the nastiest little rascal that ever lived. But if I were truly a snake with a snake's mentality I'd probably take captivity. Roof over my head, good food, and warmth.
yeah.

Oh, I love this question!
I am a reptile with only the reptilian complex to guide me. I have fight or flight reactions to everything in my environment. Other creatures I encounter are either prey or predators.
Would I choose to live in a spacious naturalistic habitat with clean water and plentiful food and if I am really lucky a conjugal visit or two, or go it in the wild? Would I rather have my food delivered to me parasite free? Or risk infection, starvation, or death to find it? Would I rather get my jollies by avoiding and fighting deadly predators or by trying to tag the large warm creature that removes my feces?
I'd be kept.....
