There are no guidelines or rules regarding substrate or decor for snakes from the AZA. It is based solely on what the keeper wishes to accomplish. The display has to be keeper-friendly and safety is of definite concern. The other issue with large elaborate enclosures is the inevitability of health issues that will eventually arise from these after some time. Bacteria, mold, humidity, insects and so on are all constant battles. These exhibits look nice, because that is what people expect/want to see. But they also have staff people hired to work these areas daily to keep them up. However, peek in the back up area, or visit a staff member's private collection, you'll find things much simpler and geared towards better management.
