Hello,
Has anyone applied for permits to obtain and keep antivenom? If so can you please give me some help in doing the same. I currently have atrox and a few exotic vipers. I am certain that the anti-venom for the exotics is not available in my area.
Thank you,
vette

All interested parties should check into the status of this wonderful new antivenin called CRO-FAB. It may be only rumor, but it's enough to scare the pants off of many hot keepers. I can't verify the truthfullness of this, but I heard they (Savage Ind.) have a lawsuit against them for insufficient testing. I also heard first hand (from the local zoo....who is required to keep antivenin on hand) that it cost $750+ per vial as compared to $225+ for the old horse serum. Now that's not so bad in and of itself, but add the fact that Wyerth (think I spelled that right) has supposedly announced that they will produce ONE MORE run of their horse serum and then stop. I can't prove any of this, but it will sure make you stop and think. The local zoo has been told the old serum is on backorder. Better check your local hospital too. I could be completely wrong. I said before that this could be rumor. But doesn't it make you stop and think. Suddenly, the infamous atrox bite might not be a matter of cost, it might be a matter of "I can't get the antivenin for what????". I hope I'm wrong, but I also hope this makes some of these amateur herpers who suddenly want to get some exotic South American Viper stop and think.....Oh by the way, I also heard that this new CRO-FAB doesn't work for ALL new world Pit Vipers like the old one did, only North American Pit Vipers. Once again, I hope I'm wrong, but stop and think anyway. A little thought and reason never hurt a hot keeper.
Think about it,

CroFab may or may not be cross-reactive to non-North American pit vipers. We honestly don't know yet. It is only mmade with five or six venoms whereasa the Wyeth Polyvalent is made with about twice as many, including some central/south American rattlesnakes and, I believe, one representative of Bothrops. (The Wyeth serum also shows cross-reactivity to a few Trimeresaurus venoms.) I believe that the actual cost comparison would be $780 for CroFab versus $540 for Wyeth, but I would have to check that out. I know nothing of the lawsuit against Savage or Protherics--who is the actual manufacturer.
Regardless of the cross-reactivity issues, you are better off being treated with as specific an antivenom to your bite as possible. (Also, most exotic avs are quite a bit less expensive than our domestic brands.) As far as the permitation for av, Tim Friede--a member here--might be willing to walk you through the process.

Wyeth is made with C. adamanteus, atrox, durrisus, terifficus, and Bothrops atrox whereas Crofab is produced with C. adamanteus, atrox, scutelatus and A. piscivorous. So you see why the Wyeth serum has a wider range of cross-reactivity.

my price comparison came from the reptile handler at the zoo. Their pricing may be different, or they may be buying in quantities, but he was quoting $$$ from invoices. who knows what the hospitals pricing would be...

I checked my Antivenom Index. Your prices were correct. My bad..... However, I do believe that with the current shortage, Wyeth may have gone up.
And, yes, they are doing only one or two more runs of AV production.

Actually Roger, you were correct the first time. Last October, the *wholesale* price of Wyeth Polyvalent was in excess of $540/vial. The identical Fort Dodge product was priced at around $225/vial. This product is produced by Wyeth but is not approved for use in humans. It is for veterinary use only.

Don,
Thanks for the info. I had checked my prices with the AZA's Antivenom Inded, 1999 edition. Obviously, it was outdated.
Cheers
