I seen a puff adder at a reptile store. He was about 8 inches, but had the sniffles. A friend of mine purchased him and is now wondering how to get rid of that. I told him that is a respiratory infection and can lead to the snakes death. I have never had a snake with this problem. What are the proper procedures to use when this happens to remedy the snake? Is there a certain drug to use? IF so, where can he get it? The sniffles are not that bad. There is no puss coming out of his mouth. Can this snake be saved? Thank you eveyone!

Hi there,
If the snake is wheezing, then it is likely a mild respiratory infection.
First of all you need to increase the temperature of the enclosure. By increasing the temperature, any potential infection should be fought off before it gets any worse. Keep the enclosure between 82f and 86f ambient, with a basking surface temperature of 90f. If the snake has shown no improvement within a few days, then you MUST TAKE IT TO AN EXPERIENCED REPTILE VET!
If the snake is exuding bubbly mucous from the nose/mouth, then it is likely to have pneumonia - which is very serious! GET IT TO AN EXPERIENCED REPTILE VET A.S.A.P. He/she will likely administer injectable Enrofloxacin (Baytril). It is a broad spectrum anti biotic that will usually stop the infection within a 3-4 days.
Hope this helps you (and your friends charge).
