Hi everyone, I would like to make my own snake cages. This is for anyone who has successfully made there own. I would like to make one roughly 4' long 4'wide and at least 2-3'tall. I want a secure enclosure but where it is still viewable at least from the front. What materials are best to use. Also the snake Im wanting to house in the cage is an Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake. I have alot of wood, and can get alot more,I just want to hear what you used and the procedure you used to make your cage. Thank you

I want the front to be see through(probably plexiglass)the sides to be wood, the back to be vented the mid-top to be screen to hold a heat lamp, and the bottom to be probably plexi glass, I want to make at least 3-4 of these and put one in one corner of my room, one beside it and so on until I reach the other corner of the room and then place another agains that corner also. Im looking for the display look. Also I need the cage to be able to retain moisture to keep humidity up. Just tell me about how you made your cage even if its nothing like I mentioned.

I made 2 enclsures in a simillar manner. Only the front part is glass and the rest is wood. I have lots & lots of holes on the top and a light bulb inside on the upper-back corners or in middle. the glass slides upwards. it`s very simple. Mine aren`t big but I don`t keep big snakes in them, only nose horned vipers and a pope. wood retains moisture pretty good from what I know,it`s resistent to heat and acts as a thermal-isolater as oposed to glass which is cold and can easily crack from exces heat. Plastic also melts from heat.

Jeremy,
It sounds like you are looking to make something very much like Chris Harper's cages.

Why not email him and ask if he will send you the plans for them?

Plexiglass flexes too much, unless it's really thick ($$$). Acrylic is likly a better choice, but would still cost more than glass. Make sure you seal the wood or it will swell or rot with the humidity.

waterbased sealant is non toxic, i recently built 2 big wood cages, they were both stained and sealed with a waterbased chemical.
