A big thanks for the replies on my question re: rattlers.
I certainly did not expect a reply so fast. You guys are great!
We have a small farm with chickens (too many chickens)
snakes are pretty common. A few rattlers, copperheads, coachwhips and 'many' black snakes or chicken snakes.
Brings me to my next question.
Is there a safe/humane way to discourage smakes from stealing eggs?

Dyana,
This is one solution. Try the following link: http://tongs.com/shop/index.php?GrID=71
I have/own many products made by this company and all have surpassed my expectations; so I would certainly expect nothing less of this product. Good luck and keep safe.
Later,
Todd

I have an aunt with a small farm. Goats, chickens, etc. I love her attitude concerning the ratsnakes that occasionally eat eggs --
She figures that since one ratsnake will eat 6-10 mice or rats a month that its worth paying the snake an egg every now an then. She said if she were putting out traps she would have to check them, empty them, bait them, reset them. She says she's just paying the snake to do the work for her. :-)

My Grandfather always let the Rat Snakes, and other Species that lived around he’s chicken coop and barn have all the eggs they wanted. He also said it was worth doing with all the mice & rats they killed, I guess the trade off is worth a few eggs huu? If man could only learn that Snakes are one of the best form of pest control, a lot of problems would be stopped. I have known a lot of old folks that would not dare kill a Snakes they found on their farms and in their yards. Strange how so many ppl show fear of these Animals, when if it was not for these creatures, we would have so many problems from other more dangerous pest, that man would not be able to live a comfortable life. We owe these creatures a lot of respect, for just that one reason....listen to me rambling on and on, I sound like my old Science Teacher “LOL”, guess he rubbed off on me to much, ohhhh well, I will learn to live with it...........Be safe ya’ll, happy herping, Wally

Hey Wally,
Have you ever noticed a difference between attitudes in southern alabama versus northern alabama?
I've noticed that in North Georgia, where there is less agriculture and fewer snakes, people tend to hate them. In extreme South Georgia, where there is lots of agriculture and LOTS of snakes, people are more accepting of their presence. Heck, in the most rural areas of south Georgia even the most uneducated people know the difference between "ground rattlers" "smut-tails" and "diamondbacks." -- and don't you dare kill a kingsnake down there. They'd hang ya.
One of the most astounding quotes I heard when displaying snakes at chattahoochee nature center in north Georgia was by an obviously well-off lady who came through the line looking at my rattlesnakes. She said "Now we don't have RATTLESNAKES in Georgia, do we?" I said we do and asked her where she was from, expecting her to say she'd moved here from Michigan or something. She came back with "No, I've lived here my entire life." --

Hey Chad, very ironic, most ppl in this state are very fearful of Snakes, same as other places, but I have noticed that ppl in South AL, and small parts of North AL, are more tolerant of Snakes. Now I will tell you, if they see a Venomous Snake, no matter what kind it is, they will kill it for the most part. My Grandfather always told me “never let me see you kill a Snake, he would say “sun if you kill Snakes you will only be adding more problems for yourself. When I look back on it now, I see that if it was not for my Grandfather, I probably would be just like other Snake haters. I have noticed, its mostly farmers that tolerate Snakes, and most of them know the deference between Venomous and Non-Venomous. The most feared Snake here would have to be the Cottonmouth, it don’t matter how fare away from the Snake they are, they will try to find a way to kill it. Bad thing is tho, most of the time the Snake they kill ain’t even a Cottonmouth, its normally one of the 3 “I think that number is right” Species of Water Snakes we have in AL. Strange how ppl that live closer to nature, actually understand the need for Snakes huu?.............Be safe ya’ll, happy herping, Wally
