Hey ya’ll, I just got home from doing a little herping this morning. I found a small (Agkistrodon contortrix) Copperhead, this morning, it was only about 2 ft. long, it seemed to be cold because it was not moving about much. It must have got stranded out in the cold last night, he/she did not even show any of the normal hipper movements you would associate with Copperheads. I picked it up with my old homemade hook, and it rode the hook well. It was a good colored Snake, only wish I would have brought my camera, “darn it”ohhh well, thats what I get for not thinking “LOL”......Be safe ya’ll, happy herping, Wally

Hey Wally, we have had some very nice weather here over the last two weeks or so. I've done a little herping but havent found anything other than some lizards. I heard that this nice weather is gonna end soon so we need to enjoy it while it last.

Sounds Great Wally! I was disappointed in Houston however, with my hunting. I did however, have a nice surprise with my female Agkistrodon P. Piscivorous this evening. Normally I have to feed her in a "feed tub" all dark, but tonight, she readily took 2 mice with no teasing.
When I went in to check on my babies, I noticed her paying very close attention to my movements. This made me think she was hungry, so I lob in a mouse for her. No sooner than it hit the floor, she was tagging it. She flung that thing about the cage and dropped it. She wasted no time in gobbling it down. When she was done, she was again watching me and every movement. I took this to mean, she wasn't full, so in another one went. Once again, she slammed it. Wow, it was so odd to see this beautiful snake who normally pays no attention to anything, moving about like a jack rabbit.
This now more than ever, makes me realize just how quick one can be. Amazing, simply amazing.
Cheers,
Matt

Matt, good to hear that your Cottonmouth started taking food on her own, glad to hear. Hope she keeps it up for you, I know working at the Zoo I worked at that (Agkistrodon p. piscivorous) can be a picky eater at times, I will keep my fingers crossed for you that she keeps it up. Good luck..........Be safe ya’ll, Wally

Thanks Wally. She's been a good eater, as long as you keep her in the dark, all alone for a few hours. It was just an overwhelming surprise to see her eat. It was like watching a lion devour a Cape Buffalo. She was so alert and so not normal. I'm guessing she's pretty close to being ready for breeding again. I wish you could have seen how non-Cottonmouth she was. There was none of this very still head tilted up waiting, it was all explosive. After completion of her meal, she went right back to her normal "couch potato" look.
Take it easy,
Matt
