I feed my western cottonmouth mice, but I occasionally feed it bass minnows. Does anyone else feed their cottonmouths fish? If so what is the ratio between feeding fish and mice/rats?

I only feed mice and rats. I'm sure a fish now and then is OK, but I wouldn't use wild caught fish without freezing them first. I would expect fish and snakes to have too many parasites in common (though that's an assumption on my part).

yeah i would think fish could give a snake parasites pretty easily, i only feed mice, and preferably thawed mice.

You could also use "feeder" Goldfish from the pet store. They are generally pretty cheap. You're gonna have some smelly poop to clean up.

do not use bait fish or gold fish! bait fish are kept in some sort of funky water, my aunt lost a caiman to bait fish, and goldfish cause some sort of buildup that i cant think of right now, but is ultiamtely fatal.

I adopted a local zoo born baby FL.Cottonmouth that would not accept pinks/fuzzies, so I fed it nothing but Pig, Leopard Frogs, Bluegill, Shiners, and sm.Bass its first 16 months. It was not until the last few months that I got him switched over to rodents. The trick was to put a piece of frog skin over the nose of a mouse/rat pup and offer it to him with hemostats about 4-5 times in a row before he took them unscented. Now that he's feeding on rodents I cut back the frequency of feedings as the fat intake is greater. Parasites have never been an issue with any of my snakes that have consumed anoles, frogs, fish etc. as young. I also do not recommend feeding store bought goldfsh for an extended period as there is chemicals in the water.

Jeremy,
The thing about the cottons is that in nature, they do tend to eat carrion, especially those found in stagnant backwater areas. Most often, this would be dead floating fish. I have witnessed this on many occasions and found that they actually loved this "non combative" meal. What I'm not sure about is the value to the snake of eating such a meal. I had a pond setup for my moccasins and they enjoyed the hunt for live as well as gobbling up the dead fish. The cleanup from the pond however, proved to be such an enormous task, that I abandond the entire thing. I had even placed nice cypress knees in the pond for "sunning". Finding leopard frogs readily available was something I wasn't able to do, however, the fish from my local stream was right up their alley.
Just another input,
Matt
