i have seem some absolutely screaming neon rhino vipers before, and i have also seen some drab grey/black specimens as well. i assume these come from different localities, or do the snakes lose the color as they age?

Hi Aaron, a bit of both really.
Like many young reptiles, young Rhinoceros Vipers (Bitis nasicornis) are more brilliantly coloured and more strikingly patterned than adults. Their colouration and patterning tends to fade as they increase in size.
The intensity of colour and pattern does correlate with an animal's geographical locality. For example, West African Rhinos tend to start off quite bright in colour (often having lots of red colouration), but end up very dark with little or no blue, red or yellow colouration. However, Rhinos from Uganda (particularly from the Ituri forest region) start off VERY bright, often having lots or bright blue and yellow and tend to retain that colouration, even as adults.
