As some of you know I live in the TN valley area on the TN river basin in Limestone County, North AL, I know that this area holds at least one Sub-Species of (Agkistrodon piscivorous). As for my question, do any of you know if this area holds both (A. p. leucostoma) and (A. p. piscivorous)? I have read a lot of Field Guides, some of witch are up to date, but in each one, I see conflicting reports as to the defined lines for their ranges. I would like to know if I have the chance of finding both Sub-Species in my area. If anyone can help me, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank ya’ll, for any responses to come......Be safe ya’ll, Wally

Wally: According to Conant's Field Guide, in the Peterson series, all 3 subspecies occur in Alabama, but the only one in your area is leucostoma. The conanti ssp enters the s.e. corner of the state, with piscivorus coming in above that in the east-central part of the state, with the rest of the state being occupied by leucostoma.
Clear as mud? ~~Greg~~

Wally, the third expanded edition I have of Conant shows that most (if not all) of Alabama piscivorus populations are intergrades of some kind (plate 34 on page 403). Looks like piscivorus X leucostoma in the northern 3/4 of the state, and piscivorus X conanti in the southern 1/4 of the state. In areas of intergradation (between subspecies), you can't have two different "pure" ones occurring together. If you have animals sharing characteristics of both, those have to be referred to as intergrades. There is probably intergrades between all three subspecies in that area between the northern 3/4 and southern 1/4 of Alabama. Would probably be neat to see what those animals look like.

Hey sballerd, thanks for the help. The (A. piscivorus) we have hear are normally very dark in color “at least the ones in North AL”, now I have been to South AL, and found some slightly colorful adult Animals. The area I live in has a very strong population of (A. piscivorus), I have seen up to 15 a day, either swimming, or basking on the bank. I love living in such a Cottonmouth candy store, being they are probably my favorite Venomous Species.........Be safe ya’ll, happy herping, Wally
