Hey ya’ll, a friend of mine that lives just North of Miami FL, told me that he found 3 ( C. h. atricaudatus) Canebrakes, in deep South FL, last Fall. Could this in anyway be true? I know that according to all the known Field Guides, ( C. h. atricaudatus) can only be found in the fare North of FL. If anyone else has heard of this happening before, please by all means tell us. It would be something to find out that Canebrakes are working their way further South into FL huu?...........Be safe ya’ll, happy herping Wally

I dont think so unless they were intentionally released. That isnt their habitat at all down there. It is too dry which is suitable for the Adamanteus. Plus the need the winter to hibernate and being from south florida, it doesnt get that cold :) But like I said before they easily could of been released, there have been King cobras and forest cobras been found.

How well does your friend know his venomous snakes? I guess the casual observer could easily mistake a nicely striped pigmy for a juvenile c. horridus.

I would have to say that if they were in fact horridus, they were put there by someone. It certainly would not be the first time an exotic reptile was released in south Florida.

Hey ya’ll, thanks for responding. The friend that told me this has a good knowledge of Venomous and Non-Venomous Snakes. I saw pictures of the Snakes he caught, they were ( C. h atricaudatus). They were very brightly colored, absolutely beautiful Specimens. I tend to agree with ya’ll, I think they could have been released in the area by some un-knowledgeable keeper. I just wanted to see if anyone else on this site had seen Canebrakes in South FL. Thanks again for responding..........Be safe ya,ll, Wally
