Someone in Ohio suffer a Rhino bite during the night and had to get serum from the Cincy Zoo. I don't have other details but I will not be surprised if Hot's are banned in Ohio this year.
The formation of the NEAVB will help but people will have to raise their level of care when working with their animals.

I would tend to think that there are just as many bites in other states as well, not only OH. I have a filling that the Media in OH, are just out to help the Ban crazed Law Makers. I sometimes wonder if the Media are going to be the down fall of our hobby, they only report those in our community that do not meet safe keeping standards. In this way they damn our hobby with un-needed Bans, I am beginning to think we will never be able to save our hobby. Sometimes I think our days are numbered, we are becoming relics of the past, by means of Law Makers. The Law dose not in anyway care if most of the knowledge that is known about this Animals, comes from privet keepers. I see a time coming when Laws will be in place to keep even Non-Venomous keepers from having such Animals as Corn Snakes, Kingsnakes, and other totally harmless Species in their care. In my opinion, This is just another violation of our Constitutional Rights as free Americans. I don’t care if the Right to keep Venomous Snakes is in the Bill of Rights, the point here is that our Government could care less about our Right to privacy. I know that a lot of people think regulations would take care of the problem, but think about this, once they get a foot in the door, they can keep going. Once they have that big political foot in our hobby, it will just make it easier for them to keep passing unethical Laws towards our hobby. I am beginning to disagree with any regulations on our hobby because of that one reason......Be safe, hope you all have happy herping, that is if we can even keep doing it thanks to Vote hungry Politicians, Wally

The question is, What was he doing with his snake at 04:00hrs? Virtually every day there is some thing in the press ie illegaly kept aniamls, illegitimate bites, escaped animals etc as all ready mentioned its only a quetion of time before its banned, YOU have to do some thing about it. Surely there must be a legal loop hole when you look at iresponsible vehicle drivers or gun owners who injure or kill thousands per year that if keeping of venomous snakes is banned because of iresponsible keepers(in the most part) then hipotheticaly cars and guns should be banned.

he was feeding, or doing regular cage maintenance!!
When I had snakes that is the time I would do the cage cleaning, feeding, etc. Nothing unusual about that, esp. for someone who has a full time job and possibly a family. My, my, we are quick to SLAM someone when they are bitten...that is a calculated risk in this hobby!! As long as people are keeping venomous snakes, there will be people that are getting bitten...maybe from force feeding, perhaps from giving meds, or maybe downright unsafe acts.
I'm afraid if we are relying on zero bites to keep legislation away then we should hold our breath.

I am not now or do I plan ever to keep a hot snake. I have been a police officer here in Portland Ore for 35 yrs. Over the years the only hot snakes to make the paper were kept by people involved in crime. The last being 5 rattle snakes from a meth user. The young man got in more trouble for the snakes than the dope. It seems to me all the wrong people have to ride the heat for people that make the news. We have officers that have hots and they in noway want to fall to the rules that will be set by law makers that no nothing about Venomous Reptiles.
Everytime there is a big reptile exhibit the hot owners need to get together to be ready to battle the lawmakers in each state. Organize. Be ready . it will take some bucks but each State Hot Keepers need to watch their local lawmakers, keep up on what is being talked about in the House and Senate. Be prepared to let these people know that you are serious about what you do and have pictures of how the snakes are kept. If they would ask you how to write laws for hot keepers be prepared and have some ideas how to respond.(Venomoids is not the answer either)
Everytime you hear of a bite some where take time to write to their local paper and promote keeping hots.
To the people that pictue your snakes here I Thank You. What a great site.. Respectfully, Catspaw (Carl) Rilling Oregon City Ore..

Your quite right, in this hobby mistakes will happen. I work a 12hr shift have a family and at 04:00hrs I'm not the brightest bunny and thats even when I'm working nights. With the amount of publicity that the hobby is getting in the USA I would of thought that owners would be extra vigilant during husbandry procedures(I have no idea of the circumstances surounding the bite). It was not intended to SLAM anybody, but its your hobby in your country thats slowly fading from state to state, and the lawyers are acting quicker than you. I'm ok, my country has a licensing law and if I stick to the law I get to keep my animals. I'm just concerned about fellow hobbiests losing out through bad publicity.
regards
John

Not much info., but here's a link:
http://www.wbns10tv.com/Global/story.asp?S=2908997
Is there anything wrong with calling the pet "Deadly" in the story title when the man is reportedly in stable condition?? Sure, the snake is potentially deadly, but so are all cars, dogs, lollipops, buckets of water, plastic bags, second-hand smoke, scissors etc. The media is not helping this hobby either!
