This one has a link to a video...
This one mentions that zoo personel are at risk because they had to use their A/V to save the mans life....just what the A/V bank is going to prevent.

...they do nothing constructive. Their job is to report what other people actually do, therefore, they need to make the articles as interesting as possible to attract readers, sell papers, and get an "at a' boy" from their boss.
Whether the bite is serious or not, the media will always make it as spicy to read as possible.
Just check out Yahoo, about the 4 year who drove his mothers car to the video store. Tell me that this isn't a more serious threat to endangering the public, that a snake locked in a cage??? Yet, no charges will be filed!!!
Every day, the quote from George Carlin gets more reinforcement: "Think of the average intelligent person you know, and remember, half of the population has an IQ below that!"

Regarding the 4 year old driving a car at 0130hrs. The question isn't why was he driving a car, but what was a four year old doing up at 0200 hrs? If he had a pet snake, he could have been feeding or cleaning it and the car incident might never have happened. See? Keeping snakes can be a GOOD thing!

A Medical Director of one of the nations PCC (Poison Control Centers)has done an epidemological study on snakebite that was presented at the BOR symposium. Most of the "non-natural" bites occur between Midnight and 6 AM. Just at the right time "to piss off to the MAX" some poor zoo keeper that has to run to the zoo and get serum to save his ass. The MD's of these center can't wait and are in fact very supportive of the Antivenom Bank we are forming.
I know there are many keepers out there who have not filled out a questioneer yet. How about you guys? Do you want to be part of the solution or part of the same old problem?

I know I'm preaching tot he choir here, but since I haven't noticed anyone pointing this out recently, I'll remind everyone.
It seems like at least half of the high profile bites in the last year or two have been from bitis. There is NO EXCUSE to get bitten by a captive bitis. Anyone keeping them should know that they are incredibly fast stikers. Furthermore they are almost always easy to handle with hooks. There is NO REASON to EVER have any part of your body within striking range of a bitis, EVER, EVER, EVER. Use hooks to handle, use LONG forceps or tongs to feed and DON'T stick you hand in the cage without removing the snake. I won't even reach into a gaboon's cage for a water dish while using a shield like I will with some others because I 'm sure that he can push past the shield in mid strike if he feels like it.
Like everyone else, I have no information about how the latest bite happened, and I hate when people jump to conclusions too, but I can't begin to imagine a situation other than someone cutting corners and being careless... It's not like a rhino lept out of the cage, charged across the room and scuried up his hook...

I think of the NEAVB as Venomous Snake Insurance. If I could afford it I would have personal health insurance. But the NEAVB membership fees are far less than that of health ins., making it a very attainable fee to pay(for me). I'll hopefully have health insurance soon, but in the meantime and thereafter I'm all for the NEAVB.

Bitis, Bothrops or Crotalus.
All of these bites(though I don't know the full circumstances of the Urutu bite) were due to carelessness and complacency.
1) Bushmaster bite in MI....'peeling skin(dry shed) off of a large adult 'blackheaded' bushmaster. Problem: Too confident and presuming the snake won't turn around and bite
2) Bushmaster Bite in MI. Problem: Taking your eyes off a snake that was just fed, without closing the cage AND ASSUMING, the snake is not going to let go of the rat
3) Rhino viper bite in Oh. Problem: Workign with a snake in the middle of the night, when you're likely not at your sharpest.
The key element in all bites, is a false sense of comfort working around the snakes and complacency. I was reminded this morning not to assume the snakes won't react. I noticed a 2 year old bushmaster coiled behind a plant, which was odd for a bushmaster to not retreat to a hide box by daybreak. I immediately assumed, that likely it had deficated in its hide box and refused to go back in it. I grab a cage hook to lift the hide box with---and sure enough, as soon as the bushmaster(which I ASSUMED WAS SLEEPING AND UN-ALERT) saw the movment, It lunged out from behind the bush like the heat seeking missiles they are, as if I were offering it a mouse!
BE AWARE PEOPLE AND BE EXTRA CAREFUL!! THese aren't toys you are playing with. I always tell myself "Even though you know what you are doing, You're really scared sh&Tless of these animals--it's what keeps you alive!"

No excuses....true. But not all people work a 9-5 schedule and to some people 0400 may be no different than 1600 to you and I. That's just what many legislators are guilty of.....making uninformed assumptions. Let's try not to be like them!

but at the same time, i know many of us 9-5'ers, spend countless hours up to late messing with animals, trying to feed one last snake. Many of them are nocturnal feeders and we all end up doing late night feeding regimens until 1AM.
I think we all care for our animals so deeply, that we don't know when to say when and just say "I'm going to bed...the snakes are going to have to wait."

To my fellow herpers. I am truly sorry to hear of this person being bit, but this is just one of very few bites from privately kept Venomous Reptiles. We as keepers know that bites can and will happen, that is one of the risk we take by keeping these highly volatile Animals. Now, when Law Makers start passing Bans on keeping because of these bites “witch I might add are very few in comparison to how many keepers we have in this Country” so, why do we bicker among ourselves, and by doing so, we do not by any means help our hobby, do we? If we could only come up with a way to compromise with each other, over how to regulate our hobby, it would help a lot more than Banning keeping all together. Please, and I do mean please stop this bickering among yourselves, and lets try to come up with a comprehensive way to solve this problem. If we don’t start fighting this unfounded madness soon, we will all be without our beloved Venomous beauties, for the exception of the keepers that do research. I am by no means a expert, but I do see us losing our beloved hobby one State, and Step at a time. Its funny how we as a community argue so much over the legalities of our hobby, yet we all want to keep our Animals. I hate to be the one to say this, but if we don’t pull together very soon, we can KISS this hobby goodbye, with Big Wet Lips. I know that some in our community believe we need regulations, but how can we be assured that Law Makers will not just keep on going after that? If the History of this Country has taught us anything, its that Laws can and will be played with like a toy, by those that make them. In other words, if we let these Law Makers put their nose into our hobby, we never know if they will stop. I can understand how some in our community think that regulations are the anser, but if we do take this rout, lets make sure the Vote Hungry Politicians can not get their foot in and change the Laws again. Just the opinion of a old Alabama Country Boy, that has seen other privileges go to the dogs........Be safe, and lets come together on this. Happy herping, Wally
