Hi Guys:
Larry, I agree with you 100%. No way should anyone enter the strike zone (+6 inches) of any of the large Bitis. You may get away with it a few times but at some point it will have you perfectly timed and you'll be a hurting. If I have any work in the cage that can't be done with tongs or forceps, out they go into a safe box. One day my Gabby hit the Plexiglas shield I was holding with my left hand while I was cleaning with the right. After I composed myself again and check my shorts, she went into the box. I have never used that with any of my Bitis again. Boxing them is far less risky than leaving them in the cage with you when your attention is not 100% on them.
As Matt points out, so nicely NEVER assume the snake won't react to a stimulus and is "sleeping".
NEVER leave a cage open and unattended even for a moment. When you come back locate the beastie before opening the door. Vision cage owners: Put foam in the upper & lower lip for the front of the cage, so they can't hide there. One investigator at the BOR symposium told me he was nipped on the finger by a neonate rattler (I don't remember the species) that was hiding under the lip of the cage.
NEVER interact with them unless you have a damn good reason to mess with them, Feeding, Cage cleaning/ maintenance, Vet procedures etc. I have never taken a snake out of the cage to EVER show another keeper, they can see it through the glass as well as I can, that is just not an acceptable risk to take. I love my snakes but I love them more when they're behind the glass.
I too work long hours but never mess with them when I'm tired or IN A HURRY. All lengthy projects including feeding waits till the weekend when I have time and I'm fully awake.
Complacency kills no matter what job you’re performing or hobby you enjoy. Since our hobby involves venomous snakes all the more reason to be vigilant.

I just learned that this is his SECOND bite. This one was not very serious but they gave 5 vials of SAVP Poly anyway.

Here's a link to the latest news story on the recent OH rhino bite. It was broadcast on the Columbus morning news this week. Too bad they don't have a video link to the actual story. Just a short article and a slideshow that doesn't show much.
