I think thats messed up to feed a snake innocent puppies! That teacher is an idiot! He should be fired! Snakes don't need to eat puppies! there are other things they can eat! I hope that snake eats that teacher see how he likes it!

Marie,
I am not sure which one(incident) you are refering to because I know of this happening in the past. I agree with what you said earlier. Please realize that we as snke keepers here do not adhere to the prestated practices. In fact most of us here also have cats and dogs as well.
Sincerely,
Todd

I too have not seen this article, but would appreciate a link to it.
Ever the Devil's Advocate it seems...I personally don't see a problem with it...as long as it is done out of the public spotlight, which this certainly wasn't. Not too terribly long ago there was a lady at an animal shelter somewhere up north who, instead of killing a bunch of puppies they had, fed them to a large snake they had adopted. She was fired and fined for animal cruelty. Animal cruetly?!?! Wtf?! They were going to be killed anyway. I personally don't see why it's a bad thing to feed something such as a dog or cat to a snake rather than letting the poor things rot at the pound for a few weeks, draining taxpayer money in feed and upkeep, and then finally being euthanized. Sure people do adopt dogs and cats from the pound, I have myself on a few occasions, but the truth is the vast majority of them at shelters that do euthanize animals never find homes. Me being the pragmatist I am wonders why anyone would be so upset at putting them to something of good use rather than letting them be a drain on society? Even if they aren't at the pound, they may end up strays and go around harassing livestock, breeding rampantly, etc. Anyway, that's my great big $0.02 and I'm sure I've stepped on plenty of toes, but I don't personally put a distinction between dogs/cats and rats/mice/rabbits/goats/chickens etc that are normally fed to snakes.

I agree with Chance. One mans pet is another mans food item.
It seems when it comes to the subject of what is considered appropriate food for our captive snakes there is division among the ranks. Take mice and rats for instance, many people both inside and outside the hobby have a strong disdain or dislike for them. Move up the food chain to guinea pigs and rabbits and you start running into the "cute" factor. Many who readily feed mice and rats would never consider feeding their pet a "cute little bunny rabbit". Take it a step further with a dog or cat and it really hits the fan. The bottom line is what makes one animals life less valuable than another? As long as the feedings are done in a humane way, without taking joy or pleasure in the animals suffering I don't see anything wrong with it.
Just my opinion

Cute or not, if the animals destiny is to be destroyed and disposed of, why not make use of that resource? I agree with Chance also. We are in NO way saying, just go out and scoop up puppies and kittens off the street, or go out and buy a $1000 pair of Golden Retrievers and breed them just to fill up your freezer. All we're saying is, in the grande scheme of things, meat is meat, dont let it go to waste. Granted, doing this practice, and knowing how the general public would react, it's best to do it behind closed doors. Ethically/morally, it shouldnt be all that different from feeding ginea pigs to pythons. They're cute arent they?

To the "anonymous" post....if you feel so strongly about it, why do you post anonymously..?? Wheather you feed your snake rats or puppies....its your choice. But when you do it in front of a school room full of children, you cross the line!! That teacher was wrong, no question about it..!!

I certainly did not mean to imply that feeding them in public would be appropriate and after reading my post again I really don't see where you might think I supported that part of the issue. I personally don't think feeding ANY live animal in public is appropriate since many people find it "cruel" or "distasteful". Why add fuel to the fire when there are groups like PETA waiting for any opportunity to ban possession of animals altogether.
As far as posting anonymously, that is my right as I undestand it or the option would not be given. But if you really must know it was to avoid my name being associated with an opinion that people (evidently you included) would not like.
